Sorority and fraternity life receive a lot of heat in the media. Whether it be through movies and television shows, the audience is given a version of Greek life, which is mostly false. Even in reality, sometimes fraternity and sorority chapters will actually partake in activities shown in the movies (such as hazing). News media coverage will produce stories of chapters hazing new members (pledges) where sometimes it can lead to death. However, the majority of sororities and fraternities do not participate in those activities, rather do more, such as community service.

Many young women, like myself, never thought about joining a sorority when they first started college. Friends or even advertisements can encourage freshmen girls to go Greek. Most the time, women don't know what they are looking for when rushing until they actually have accepted their bid and can fully experience what it's like the be a Greek life woman. Here are a few reasons why you should join a sorority.

Friendships that will last a lifetime

You may have heard people say you pay for your friends when you join a sorority, but that's just an outside look. When you're actually in a sorority you know that statement is false, because are you really paying enough when you're surrounded by women who hold the same values and principles as yourself? Some of my closet friendships and favorite moments in college have been with my sorority sisters.

Home away from home

When away at college it can become depressing not seeing your family or high school friends everyday anymore. Joining a sorority can give you a legit family with a big sister who is there to guide you through your college career, sisters who are there to pick you up on your not so happy moments in life. From experience those type of friendships turn into family, they count on you as much as you count on them!

Looks good on a resume

I bet no one has told you, but the connection you make in Greek life can help you to land a job one day. Because honestly, it's not about the knowledge you posses, it's the people you know and the connection they have to get you where you want to be in your career. Also, all the community service and philanthropy events will look awesome on a resume. I encourage you to take up a position in your sorority as well, because those positions will prepare you for the working force.

Here are a few sorority women's reasons for joining a sorority:

"You have a comrade with other girls and you can share an experiences that you will never experience with anyone else." - Madison Love

"I joined a sorority because before I joined, I never had a stable group of friends and was really depressed for a long time. Also, I am an only child and I finally found my home and sisters in Zeta." - Lacey Bullard

"I joined a sorority because I wanted to make some friends since I didn't really have any except my roommate who I knew from high school. Also, my family had just left for Germany on military orders so I was all alone and I wanted to find my home away from home." - Natalie Porte

Now that it seems “talking” is the new way to date, and will stay that way until another idiotic term is used to describe the people who can’t settle down and just date someone, I feel as if it’s time to go over the unwritten rules of “talking.”

Rule 1. Having feeling without feeling.

What's up Asshat,

I've composed a list of things that I wish upon you, and they're harsh and cruel. These things are things that I wouldn't wish upon my worst of enemies, not even that Starbuck's barista who always screws up my order, not even him. You fall into a whole other category of hate. You surpass Starbucks barista. Congratulations, I'm actually a pretty nice person, making you worthy of every single bit of torture I wish upon you. What are these things I wish upon you you might ask?
