12 Reasons To Join Odyssey

I am the Contributing Editor for my team, Millennials of Michigan. I can't begin to describe my team in words. I couldn't begin to articulate the sheer awe and admiration I have for every single one of their voices, their stories, their lives, and ultimately their work.

I have the pleasure or reading their pieces before the rest of the world. I get the pleasure of seeing and feeling their sadness, anger, excitement, and love before they share it with other people and I love them so much more for it. This isn't about them though... well it kind of is, in a way, but these are the 12 reasons you should consider joining one of Odyssey's teams!

1. You're Not Just Joining A Team, You're Joining A Family

Your team is your family. You learn and grow together with your writing, there's no other way.

2. You Will Make New Friends

Drop your number because chances are they're wonderful and ready to be BFFs

3. You Will Always Have Someone To Listen To You

Want to bitch about something your partner did? Have no fear! WE HAVE A GROUPME

4. Your Ideas Are 100% Valid

Afraid that you have no idea if you're doing or saying the right thing? Ask your Odyssey Family! They will give you constructive feedback, and even sometimes help you understand something you may not know.

5. You Get To Build Your Own Audience

When you start writing, you begin to build your audience based on how and what you want to base your content on. Who will you choose?

6. Your Editing Team Will Assist In Engaging You With Your Audience And With Yourself

The editing team is your friend; they can help you with just about anything from getting smaller issues to work, photos and covers, how to improve shares and views, or even life advice. We are here to support you!

7. You Will All Have A Mutual Dislike For Muse

Muse is the bane of all of our existences. We know this, and soon you will know this (they are, however, working on bugs so there's hope). *Loads for 10 years* or *Crashes 5 times in 2 minutes*

8. Sharing/Reading Your Fellow Family Members Work Will Be Thrilling

You get to read your family's content! People on your team will be passionate or funny or relatable so read and share to help out.

9. You Will Be Challenged

Everything you write will be challenged, you will be asked to examine what you're doing and who you're reaching out to.

10. Your Writing Will Enhance

The more you write, the better you will become. Write because you love writing, get better because you have the ability.

11. You Will Take This Experience Everywhere You Go (Including Interviews)

Dead serious, you can put this on your Resume.

12. Ultimately - You Will Be Loved

You will create a beautiful bond with your team, and they will love you.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
