Last week I attended a short presentation on CPR basics. It was very informative and eye opening. Even though I'm not officially CPR certified I definitely want to get certified soon. Here is my list of five reasons to get CPR certified.

1. You could help a loved one.

Family has always been important to me. Know that I could potentially help them or save them makes me want to get certified. Your parents will be happy if you can help save their life or your sibling's life if your certified. A loved one could faint and you'll be the one to actually know what to do besides "freak' out. Just remember to stay calm!

2. Adds to a resume

Having a certification like the CPR means that you'll be able to handle a high stakes situation.

3. Its a requirement for certain occupations.

Babysitting might not be a permanent career, but it does provide a good first job. A parent may be more willing to leave their child with a babysitter that knows how to perform CPR. Being a lifeguard involves having a certification. Some jobs even require that you retake it, so you are up to date with the current regulations.

4. Save a life or two

We watched a video and a young girl was able to help save a man's life. She apparently cried tears of relief after hearing that she helped saved his life.

5. Better prepared in an emergency

If you know how to do something you are more prepared to handle it than you think. Just the knowledge of CPR can help you and the people around you feel much more safe and competent that the person will be saved.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
