Reasons To Boycott Black Friday

Is getting "deals" really worth it?

After you get done saying what you are thankful for and stuffing your face with amazing food most people prepare for a big day of shopping. It has been said to attract more people than Disney World. Yep, you did in fact read that right.. people would much rather have deals than be at the happiest place on earth. Walmart alone attracted 18.5 billion people during Black Friday according to usnews. I think there are many reasons why people should not participate in Black Friday. I feel the need to educate you on them:

1. It's getting earlier and earlier.

Black Friday is now starting on Thanksgiving. Which for some people means you can get your deals sooner, but for the workers of the stores that means less time with their families. It means coming in to prepare for the craziness anywhere from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. Can you imagine wanting to spend time with your family but having to wok? If you do, you understand the torture it is and how hard it is on your family. So why force someone else to go away from their family just because you want to shop?

2. IT IS DANGEROUS

It is really freakin' dangerous. Every year I read articles about someone getting hurt. I think that it is a little ridiculous that people would harm someone over a television. You literally should value someone's safety over that fifty inch television. I wish that was common sense... I mean I thought it was, but guess not.

3. A thing called Cyber Monday exists

Man, I wish that I could go shopping without having to put pants on... oh wait, IT EXISTS! So, why aren't more people thrilled about this? I mean, no crowds & no lines. They also have deals. This should be a bigger deal.

4. The deals aren't always the best.

Due to the craze most stores will jack up their prices before the big day so you think you are getting a deal, but sometimes you are not.

5. We tend to go a little crazy the day after we give thanks.

The day before Black Friday you sit around a table and express how thankful you are for the things you have before you go trample over people to get things you don't have. That part really floors me.

6. We all over spend that day.

You set yourself a budget on this day but you end up spending WAYYY more. So, if you opt out chances are you will save some cash.

7. You have to get up early.

My friends get up at 4 am to go shopping! I honestly think that it is so crazy. I personally need all the sleep I can get to function properly therefore the thought of waking up that early just makes me sick to my stomach.

8. Too many people.

EEK!!! The thought of that many people in one area makes me want to cry!! I am just not a people person, at all.

I am not saying you are a horrible person for wanting to go shop. I get it. I personally would rather sleep than have to push through people.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
