When I was growing up, I struggled to understand the perks of living in a small town. To me, there was only so much that Ledyard, Connecticut could offer. My graduating class was shy of 200 students. I've memorized almost every back road in my town and those bordering. And you couldn't go to the center of town without seeing at least seven familiar faces. Everything was always so familiar, unchanging, and reoccurring. I was bored. It wasn't until my move to Charlotte North Carolina that I began to appreciate the backwoods that built me. Here are 11 reasons you should appreciate your small town.
1. The entire population is your network.
While I used to regret knowing everyone (and having everyone know me), it could potentially work in my favor. Take advantage of all the people you meet and embrace the sense of community.
2. It takes 10 minutes to drive across town.
Definitely a gas-saver.
3. The scenic back roads.
Let's face it, every road is a back road... but you can't beat the view.
Whether it be open land or blossoming trees, there is always nature to be observed.
4. Locally grown foods.
It's likely your small town features farms, gardens and agriculture on every street corner. Take advantage of the reliable crops and produce.
5. Rush hour doesn't exist.
From 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in Charlotte, it is a battle zone that barricades the streets. That kind of hustle and bustle usually doesn't exist in small towns, so be thankful.
6. If rush hour existed, you could still walk places...
The center of town is likely a mile or so up the road. You always have the option to walk.
7. Slow-paced living.
Small towns are unfamiliar to skyscrapers, main stream highways, and modern technology. It's quiet. Those of us who are homegrown are usually plain and simple and easily value the beauty of life.
8. Parking is prevalent.
9. A lack of things to do forces you to be with friends and family.
While there are many perks of living in a small town, I have to admit we don't have the privilege of attracting tourists or outsiders. Because we have a lot of free time, we get to make memories with those who matter most.
10. Getting "the usual."
11. Leaving your doors unlocked.
I never have to worry about locking my doors. In my small town I feel safe and comfortable. Plus, a majority of the crime rate is likely from locals doing 30 miles per hour in the ever-so-prevalent 25 zone.
