Reasons J-Term Is Going to be Awesome.

Here are some reasons for why J-Term can be amazing!

Reasons J-Term Is Going to be Awesome.

Some people were really excited for the January intercession of classes here at OBU, and some dreaded it. Either way, it is nice to remember why it is going to be AWESOME (or how we can make it that way).

1. "J-term is gains term" - Christopher Calmes, freshman at OBU

We can use this time to get fit, eat right, and get back on track with working out. Lots of us started the fall semester strong but have since lagged behind. It's time!

2. We can catch up!

Even though there are classes and some homework, J-term is also a time to catch up on those books you have been wanting to read, that fun project you have been working on, or that song you've been itching to learn on your instrument.

3. Social time!

This is a time where even during the week days, friends can hang out and go ice skating, go to the (second run, therefore cheap) Hornbeck theater, go to Oklahoma City, or go on a mini weekend road trip. This is time to bond, people.

(I love this photo because it looks like it would be in a textbook as a chapter titled "Lifestyle in College" or "Healthy Social Interaction")

4. Get those classes in

On the academic side, J-term can be a time to catch up on a Biology or Spanish class and get the credit. It is condensed, so be warned, and don't forget that YOU CAN DO IT!

5. Or, just take the free class

You could be a freshman that is just taking the Worldview class, and you are ready to have a great time. The class will teach you a lot about different worldviews and the Christian worldview, so that is cool.

6. More naps

Some people are regular nap takers, and if this is you, this is your time to shine. For all those people that never had time for a nap, this time is for you too. Cozy up with a blanket and take a nap, it'll be great.

7. Get Organized

You have time to clean your room! Is that a good thing? Yes, it is. Take the time out to get organized, clean out your closet of things you never wear, find ways to decorate your dorm, or make the layout more practical. These are all ideas for getting your room (or your life) somewhat more organized. Check out Pinterest for some ideas too!

8. Make some money!

Lots of us will be working during J-term. Making money is super important for college and you can definitely use this time to work toward making some mulah.

9. MORE PARKING

There aren't as many people here, so there are more parking spots! Praise the Lord!

10. Try something new

Do something you have never done during this J-term. Hangout at a new place or check out some of the events and groups the Shawnee community has to offer. Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, and it is rewarding too. Meet some people outside OBU and get to know them. Ready to start an accountability group or small Bible study? Now is your chance! Start organizing it or get some friends and start meeting.

I hope you all have a wonderful and prosperous January Term!

James 1:12

Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

19 Lessons I'll Never Forget from Growing Up In a Small Town

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
