Reasons to Sign Up for that Optional College Preorientation

I still recall the day I moved into my freshmen dorm Minta Martin. It was August 22 2015 and although it was hectic, not all the freshmen were on campus yet. This was because my college offered an optional pre orientation. Every time I look back on it I cannot help but think about how different my life might have been had I not done a program.

1. With less people it will feel less intimidating

As someone who came from a small private school I was a little nervous about learning my way around and finding my niche. However, by being with about twelve people who were in a similar situation it was much easier to make friends.

2. You will know more people when it comes to the first day

As a college freshman there is no better feeling than seeing a familiar face on the first day on classes. If you do a preorientation program you would have already been on campus for over a week

3. You get to move in early!

Some people prefer one side of the room over the other. Getting adjusted to dorm life is a different experience for everyone. From sharing a room with a complete stranger to getting used to communal showers, moving in early allows you to establish a routine.

4. You might form your strongest unexpected friendships

I am very lucky to have met most of my friends during that first week. While some people had advice from older siblings, we felt a sense of comfort in knowing that we were somewhat clueless.

5. You will become comfortable with going out of your comfort zone

If you told me three years ago that I would zip line, go crabbing and water tube in the same week I would not believe you. By doing a pre orientation program I had the opportunity to do activities that I would not have done otherwise. I also became best friends with people who I might not have met otherwise and were majoring in the complete opposite field as I was.

6. You may be told information or be given advice that no other freshmen will know

When is the dining hall most crowded? Are there shortcuts on campus? These were questions I got answered that made my first few weeks so much easier.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
