Reasons why Being in School is Better than Work

You may think you're ready to be done with college, but trust me it's not all it's cracked up to be.

So school has been back in session for a couple weeks now, and being that I am no longer in school and have to be a big girl now, here are some reasons why being in school is better than work. Even if you think that you’re ready to be done school, trust me, school is still better.

You can do your work at your own pace. Other than due dates', you can pretty much chip away at a paper or research at your own pace and in a place you’re comfortable. At work you have to go by your boss’ pace. If he/she wants those numbers in an hour, you have to get those numbers in that hour. Also for the most part you’re in your office, but more likely a cubicle, where you can hear everyone else.

Class doesn’t take up as much time as work does. If on any given day (for an average student) you’re in class for 2-3 hours, and you maybe have a longer lab. Work however usually starts at 8am or 9am and ends between 4pm and 6pm, and maybe longer if you have a demanding job. By the time you get home, you’re tired and just want to relax. No more last minute trips during the day or hanging out with your friends late into the night.

You get to see your friends every day! At school you’re essentially around your friends' all day. But at work you’re mostly left to do your work by yourself and only get to hang out with friends during lunch. But these are usually work friends so you can’t talk about all the things you normally would.

Here’s a big one, you get to sleep more at school. Most people i knew always tried to pick later classes to be able to sleep in. at your 9-5 job, guess what? You have to be there at 9, no more sleeping past 8 during the week.

Once you do wake up, you can wear almost anything you want. Feeling sweat pants every monday? Go for it! At work you have to dress nicely for the office, which is often cold and you wish you could wear sweat pants. You also only get to wear jeans on Friday and only if someone told you that was allowed.

There is probably better food at school than at work. Sure sometimes you get to go out to lunch but most of the time it is bland sandwiches, or whatever the cafeteria makes (if you have one of those at your work). At school there are pizza places within walking distance, and a plethora of other dining establishments.

Technically you don’t even have to go to your classes, if you do that at work you get fired. It is much harder to take “personal health” days.

You also get winter and summer breaks! Unless you take classes, in which case you still get a week off here and there. But at work you get a day or two for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor day. Other than that you have to use your vacation days.

While you’re still in school, you don’t have to worry about paying back your loans yet. They are just that big pile of debt hanging over your head, that you don’t have to think about yet. But at work, you are essentially saving up to be able to pay those off

You also don’t have to have it all figured out yet while you’re in school. But once you graduate, everyone starts asking you about your plans for the rest of your life. And your job is supposed to be the one you want.

So stay in school as long as possible, because it is tough out here.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
