20 Reasons Preteen Me Would be Proud of 19-Year-Old Me

Things have changed since 2008.

20 Reasons Preteen Me Would be Proud of 19-Year-Old Me
Kellen Korinek

One of my favorite ways that I measure how far I've come in my life is by asking myself if 10-year-old Kellen would be proud of the person I am today. Here's why I'm pretty sure he would be.

1. I saw KISS in concert and sang "Rock & Roll All Nite" at the top of my lungs.

I used to jam out and sing KISS at the top of my lungs every time I cleaned my room.

2. I can wear superhero t-shirts without being made fun of.

Now everyone does it, it wasn't as cool back then.

3. I've read all the "Harry Potter" books and watched all the movies.

I was in the process at that age, but all the movies hadn't come out yet.

4. I have more than 100 friends on Facebook.

I only got Facebook at the end of fifth grade, so I didn't have many friends. On the other hand, I've gotten like 150-200 Facebook friends in the last year.

5. I have two Ramones T-shirts.

Here's me in my lucky Ramones T-shirt on the last day of fifth grade.

6. I listen to music in the green truck as loud as I can.

Here's a super cool picture of me in the parking lot.

7. I still write stories.

They just feature far less girls from my class and far less adventures in the mall at midnight.

8. I was the MVP of the Centura Football team.

This tiny uncoordinated weirdo never would've believed that I could ever do that.

9. I have a girlfriend who actually likes me and goes on dates with me.

No hate towards my fifth grade girlfriend, but she decided that she didn't like me as much as she liked someone else. But, there was a lot of note passing. Ah, fifth grade romance, it's just wonderful.

10. I'm a lifeguard at the pool.

Fifth grade me wasn't a great swimmer, let alone lifeguard material.

11. I metaled in the 400 in high school.

Fifth grade Kellen's proudest achievement was winning the 400 at the fifth grade track meet. (Also, disregard my face, and I'm pretty sure this is the 800.)

12. I read comic books every week.

I don't have a picture of myself reading comics, so here's Green Lantern, because he's my favorite.

13. I am a little better organized now.

That showed up on far too many of my report cards. It looked a lot like this.

14. Mom and Dad are still my hero.

They're still pretty cool, I guess.

15. I make glasses look cool.

No one calls me four-eyes anymore, at least not to my face.

16. I still play Pokemon.

17. I can twirl a drumstick with my fingers without dropping it.

I didn't have the dexterity to do that in sixth grade.

18. I still remember how to write a check.

We learned how to write checks, balance a checkbook, and make pens in fifth grade. It's weird, but at least I still know how.

19. I still jam out to the Beatles every now and again.

I loved the Beatles in fifth and sixth grade.

20. I'm not an uncoordinated weirdo anymore.

Ehh, for the most part; puberty helped. Still can't take a normal picture though.

The 5 Painfully True Stages Of Camping Out At The Library

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

28 Daily Thoughts of College Students

"I want to thank Google, Wikipedia, and whoever else invented copy and paste. Thank you."

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

As this semester wraps up, students can’t help but be stressed about finals. After all, our GPAs depends on these grades! What student isn’t worrying about their finals right now? It’s “goodbye social life, hello library” time from now until the end of finals week.

1. Finals are weeks away, I’m sure I’ll be ready for them when they come.
