I have not lived in Michigan my entire life, but I am certain that here in the mitten, "up north" has its own unique meaning.
"Going up north", by some, may mean long summers at the cottage near one of the great lakes, and for others it may mean traveling on the long northward trek to the Upper Peninsula.
In any case, the fascination behind the whole thing has led me to realize what going up north means to a Michigander.
From seeing it for myself across the good ol' Mitten, I can finally confidently say that nothing beats summertime in Northern Michigan (ask Kid Rock).
Here are some reasons behind every Michigander's love for "Up North:"
1. Visiting the Great Lakes
Obviously an iconic part of living in Michigan, although many don't understand the hype. Whether I am searching for Petoskey Stones, or tubing through the crisp water, Superior, Huron, Michigan, Ontario and Erie have made going up north that much better.
4. Bonfires, Upon Bonfires
I am always guaranteed a bonfire at night in Northern Michigan. From S'mores, to late night talks, bonfires have always been a classic element to being up north.
5. Sunrise & Sunset
Besides the fact that they are remarkably beautiful, sunrise and sunset also remind me of my "never ending day" up north. The sun rises as early as 6 AM, and doesn't set until 10 PM, allowing for more time to soak up the sun and enjoy the serenity that is Northern Michigan.
6. The Fresh Air
This seems a bit predicted, but after living in Metro-Detroit, the fresh non-industrial air of Northern Michigan is that much cleaner and refreshing to inhale, and the air changes the further north you go.
7. The Memories
Whether it is with my family, or my friends, the memories I have made in Northern Michigan will stay in my heart forever. Through lake days, bonfire nights, and simply spending time in nature, I have to say I will forever be smitten with the mitten.
