I love Young Adult literature. I have for a long time, but I’ve always been afraid to tell people – especially other college students. Why is that? Because there is such a negative stigma around reading this type of literature. I’ve had people in my classes essentially going on a rant about how there are “no good YA novels out there.” I can only assume that the person who said this read one that they didn’t like, then made a generalization of all of them. Here are the reasons that I enjoy reading young adult literature.
1. There’s a large amount of diversity
As much as people don’t want to admit it, there is diversity in YA novels, from leads who are in the LGBT community to POC to disabled. Of course, with any genre, not all of them are as inclusive as they could be, but there have been great advances in this way.
2. These books can get kids excited about reading
With technology being so advanced, the upcoming generation of kids don't read as much as they could. Young adult novels are relatable for kids because of the age, but also have the fictional aspect that allows for an air of enjoyment and detachment.
3. Badass female leads
From Katniss Everdeen to Hermione Granger, these novels make it apparent that women can do anything they set their minds to, and don’t exist just to be the love interest in novels. (Side note, Sarah J. Maas writes AMAZING fantasy novels!)
4. Book boyfriends
Need I say more?
5. They tackle all kinds of issues
Whether it’s a fantasy world ruled by a vicious King, or a young teen trying to come to terms with their sexuality, there is no issue that can’t be covered.
6. Every genre imaginable
Fantasy. Science fiction. Contemporary. Dystopian. Adventure. Romance. Horror.
And finally…
7. No one should be shamed for what they read.
You like 50 Shades? Great! Twilight fan? Fantastic! Only read books that you hear are popular? At least you’re reading! Just because you’ve read all of Charles Dickens work and read only classics, that does not make you better than the person who read the Hunger Games series. Reading isn’t a competition. It’s meant to be enjoyment and an escape.
