This year, I was lucky enough to get my two old summer jobs back. I work at a restaurant and a retirement home as a waitress. I absolutely love it, despite running around and getting flustered. I love so many things about waitressing. Here they are:
1. You learn time management
Time management is SO important while waitressing. You need to know how long it takes to get drink orders, if you can squeeze getting a dinner or dessert order in there before your drinks are ready, how long it takes the kitchen to do this or that.
2. You also learn respect
Working at the retirement home has made it so much easier to learn respect. The people you are serving live there, and you are basically walking into their dining rooms, their homes. You need to acknowledge that and be able to (quickly) show respect for that.
3. And so many other life lessons!
You learn how to work with others, even if you don't get along. You learn how to quickly problem solve and come up with a great solution. All of the things that I have learned in the last three years being a waitress I will definitely be able to use in my future jobs.
4. You find out how much a dollar is really worth
When working for tips, it's clear how badly you want that money. You start to realize that the 20s your parents have been giving you are actually worth so much more than that. You start to think, hmm are these jeans really worth 60 dollars?? Learning the true value of money is something that I have definitely done through waitressing and working for tips.
5. Friends and family mean so much more to you
Since I work two jobs, I am always pretty busy. Seeing friends and family mean so much more to me because I don't get to see them as often!
6. You become a food expert
Being around food all day, you learn what pairs the best with what and what your favorites are. You are able to help friends and customers alike when they ask for your recommendations!
7. You get exercise!
Running around from table to table is the perfect exercise in a very busy life!
