For all of my life, Christmas was traditionally spent in Lebanon, a place I consider to be my home and an aspect of my identity. Every year, I find myself counting down the days to winter break, for I know it’ll be spent in the best place on Earth, Lebanon, surrounded by aunts, uncles, grandmothers, cousins, and friends. Even though months go since the last time I spent in Lebanon, every time I return, it feels like nothing has changed. The country is still vibrant, the food is still delicious, and the scenery is still as breathtaking as ever. Here are some of the reasons for why I love spending Christmas in Lebanon.
1. It’s just the right amount of cold
While the capital city of Lebanon, Beirut, typically never reaches below 10 degrees Celsius (aka 50 Fahrenheit), it provides for the perfect balance between too cold and too warm. There's also always the option of skiing in the mountains, where the temperature is considerably lower.
2. The Christmas songs in the mall feel like home
The mix of French, Arabic, and English songs in the malls significantly enhance the environment as they provide for nostalgic memories of past Christmases.
3. The radio in the car
Because of all of the traffic, long car rides are to be expected in Lebanon, allowing us to listen to the wonderful radio stations featuring celebrity commentary, news, and of course, beautiful Lebanese songs.
4. The swirl of English, French, and Arabic being heard in every public space
Being surrounded by trilingual citizens always boosts my morale, as I feel propelled in a world of familiarity and understanding.
5. Sunday family lunches
Hummus, tabouleh, kibbeh, and family, what more could I need?
6. The decorations
There’s nothing better than being surrounded with the Christmas spirit, with lights on buildings and Christmas trees in every corner.
7. The Lebanese food
As I’ve mentioned previously, the Lebanese food is objectively the best out there, and nothing can compete with family home cooking.
8. The Lebanese spirit
Exuberant, carefree, and familiar- the perfect combination of contentment and cheerfulness.
