6 Reasons To Love Southern Miss

The queso from Tortilla Fresca in the Agora.

You haven't had the best cheese dip in the world until you've tried the cheese dip from the Agora. Located in the International Building, the Agora is a "fresh taste of the Southwest" consisting of burritos, quesadillas, and, of course, guacamole! Their signature queso complements whatever you decide to munch on.

Painting the Eagle Walk.

As a freshman or transfer, you are highly encouraged to attend GEWW, or Golden Eagle Welcome Week, at the beginning of your first year at Southern Miss. The best part about GEWW is that you get to paint the Eagle Walk on your hands and knees with bright, gold paint. And it stays there all year! I still have stains on my shorts from my freshman year. I may be biased, but it's one of the coolest traditions I've ever been apart of.

"Puppy days" at USM.

Whether it's at the beginning of the year during syllabus week, or right before finals, the Southern Pines Animal Shelter graciously brings some of their puppies to campus for students and faculty to play with. And it definitely relieves all that school stress away. If you're having a rough day, or week, or semester, head on over to the lawn in front of the Walker Science Building whenever these furry guys are here and prepare to smile and laugh your worries away!

Football at the Rock.

Regardless the final score, you can't help but love and cheer on the Golden Eagles till the end. "First down, Southern Miss... TO THE TOP!" College football is always an amazing atmosphere, and it's the pride of cheering on your own school that makes it so much fun. Our football team returns the love by running to the student section first after entering the stadium.

Bonus bucks!

Come on somebody... it's like you're not really spending any money at all. Hungry for Subway or Chick Fil A or one of those nifty pods? Just swipe your ID! It's like free food! (Well, sort of)

Those nifty P.O.D.'s.

Provisions On Demand is an understatement. There are four of these hole-in-the-wall (literally) "buffets" located at the most populated spots on campus, including Century Park, Joseph Greene Hall, Liberal Arts Building, and the Thad Cochran Center. My favorite thing to grab and go is the to-go sushi plates! They are surprisingly delicious and fresh. The P.O.D.'s also have fruit cups, sandwiches, cookies, and even brewed Starbucks coffee! I can't help but say these are probably the best investment Southern Miss has ever made.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
