Reasons Why I Love My Long-Distance BFF

With the craziness of each day’s ups and downs, everyone needs someone to go to with their problems. Leaving for college is a time when you are forced to leave the people who know you the best and the place where you feel most comfortable. You meet new people, learn interesting things and have to adjust to staying true to yourself in an unfamiliar setting. Who do I call when I need an escape from everyone and everything around me? My long-distance best friend, of course. She is my unbiased opinion, voice of reason, support system, and therapist (free of charge) that understands me inside and out. This one goes out to my best friend...thanks for being my number one homie. Here are some of the many reasons why I love you.

1. Because you’re there for me.

You answer every phone call, text, Facebook message and FaceTime. A few days may go by in the midst of our busy lives, but you always make time for me. We have come to realize that FaceTime is the most fabulous creation for two broke college girls who want to see each other but can’t afford the $300 plane ticket. No matter what, I know you’re there for me, and I’m here for you, too.

2. Because we know each other so well.

We have the same obsessions – from our favorite TV shows (who doesn’t love binge-watching "Friday Night Lights"? #TimRiggins) to our favorite late night snack (Tostito’s Hint of Lime is where it’s at) and, of course, our mutual obsession with the one and only Drizzy Drake. You can read my mind when I'm down and know every single way to cheer me up. Whether it’s stress with school, classic girl drama, a new heartbreak, or just any anxiety about life, we both know how to fix each other. We commiserate in each other’s sadness and share in each other’s happiness.

3. Because we always have fun together.

Whether we are all dolled up out on the town or just snuggled up on the couch watching "Sex and the City," it's always better when we're together. You’re the one person I could call after my brutal restaurant double shifts just to say hi and vent about everything that went wrong. You are always down for an ice cream fix (with our boyfriends Ben & Jerry), yoga lessons, pool parties, a movie date night or even just a joy ride around town while bumping to good jams.

4. Because we don’t need anybody else.

Through thick and thin, we've had our main crew and don’t tolerate fake friends or negative energy from anyone. Once you leave your little bubble of high school, people who you thought were your closest friends naturally drift away. That's just life. It’s normal for people to grow apart, but true friends always make the effort to stay connected. Long-distance BFFs are the true tests of a genuine and lasting friendship. Where ya real friends at?

5. Because you make coming home even better.

Home sweet home” has a whole new meaning when you get to see your best friend after being apart for months on end. Our holiday and summer break countdowns are even more exciting because we get to plan out every day together. Although we may be far apart when away at school, knowing we will be together soon enough gets us through missing each other. Distance really does make the heart grow fonder.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!
