Today, in the world of young adults, social media is huge aspect of daily life. A current hashtag that has been trending for quite some time is #RelationshipGoals. An Instagram famous "couple" that has been dominating this hashtag is Jay Alvarrez and Alexis Ren.
They are both extremely attractive and wealthy—and honestly, their lives are so completely unrealistic—I find it comical.
Here is picture from Jay's Instagram that accurately represents a typical post on his account:
(I told you they were beautiful.)
Jay and Alexis have both built a "relationship" based on superficial standards, and it is extremely hard for me to believe that there is any substance behind them as a couple. True #RelationshipGoals should be based on commonalities between the two people and a genuine love and respect for the type of person the other is.
Physical attractiveness is definitely a part of every relationship and is a very valid quality that needs to be present—however, a real relationship cannot be a success based on appearance or wealth.
Shouldn't we start basing our relationship goals on more than someone's physical appearance?
Another reason why Alexis and Jay should not be #RelationshipGoals is because a large majority of people (including myself) believe that their "relationship" is a total hoax in order to receive more sponsors and followers. It is no secret that these two fund their many adventures from the money they receive through Instagram and Twitter sponsors.
Here is an accurate example of a sponsored post from Alexis' Twitter account:
Although a simple hashtag that is circulating through social media is not to be taken too seriously, we should really start to rethink what true #RelationshipGoals are to each of us. We may not all look for the same things in our individual relationships—and wealth and beauty may be a priority for some of us—but we should remember that there is more than meets the eye with people and that beauty is more than skin deep.
