Each time you open your Facebook Newsfeed, you are surrounded by people voicing their opinions on a variety of matters. Whether it is Donald Trump, Obama, Cecil The Lion, or whatever else is trending in the news that day, you can't escape. Most posting is because the reader is 'offended' by what has happened or what was written. This is how I respond to them...
Here's an ironic list of reasons I'm offended you're offended.
- You're wasting good energy by getting upset.
- You're creating bad energy. If something someone does or says upsets you, move on. Be respectful and understand that everyone experiences disgruntlement, but let it go.
- Maybe you're not right in your opinions or beliefs.
- Who even decides what's "right?"
- Can anyone ever really be "right?"
- It's exhausting.
- Live and let live.
- In the grand scheme of things, what does it matter?
- You won't remember being offended by x,y, or z in 50 years.
- Your assumption that your opinion truly matters is ignorant. Yes, you're entitled to it. No, you cannot get upset that other people disagree (because they, too, are entitled to their opinion).
- The way you feel about something isn't going to change in spite of what another person thinks or believes (and vice versa). If I'm a Christian and you aren't, that's fine. I don't have to get offended when you say, "Oh my God," because my offended state won't stop you from exclaiming, "Oh my God." I'll probably just make you feel uncomfortable—maybe even angry. Here's an example of the wasting good energy and creating bad energy.
- Get over yourself.
