The media and fashion industry projects images of beauty onto us daily, but it is time we stop letting them define what beauty is. Here are six reasons why looks are not everything.
1. Being “good-looking” does not increase your self-confidence, or how you feel in your own skin.
I have been backstage at fashion shows with 200 models, 200 of the most beautiful people I have ever seen. They are also the most self-conscious. Just because they are beautiful, according to the fashion industry, does not mean they are more comfortable in their skin.

2. Being good looking is completely subjective.
What is considered "attractive" literally changes with the season. What is attractive in the fall will not be the same as the winter, the spring, or the summer.
3. Your image is superficial.
Looks are superficial. What you can post on Instagram or Facebook does not show what is going on inside you. No matter how much brightness you add to a photo, it will never amount to the amount of light you shine to the world.
4. Being “good looking” is a genetic jackpot.
Some are luckier than others. Genetically, some people are taller, shorter, healthier, lighter, darker, or have bigger ears. It happens, it is out of your control. The genetics you have are the ones that are best for you.
5. Being “skinny” does not equate with being “good looking.”
Your waist size or weight literally means nothing. The number that depicts how wide or small your hips are does not measure how many lives you have touched, or the difference you have made.
6. Because being you is the best look you can have.
This may be the most cliché saying ever -- but it is true. There is nothing better than being yourself. Your wrinkles, freckles, crooked smile, and uneven ears are your most beautiful features. You are more than the standards that society may place on you. You are more than the number on a scale, or how tall you are. You are yourself, and that is the most beautiful you could be.
