Many people think that being a Creative Writing Major is a silly choice, without much of a future, similar to how people treat Art Majors. It's such a common stereotype that artists will end up living in cardboard boxes, and it's immensely upsetting for those looking into those kinds of majors. When you excitedly tell your parents that you have chosen Creative Writing as your major, and their first questions is if you have a back up, or not. It's hard to build up confidence in your skills, when all everyone seems to think is how we aren't going to survive living in our fairy tales.
Well, let me tell you something. Living in fairy tales is what we all live for, whether you are a surgeon, or a business man, or anything else. Most of us love books, TV-Shows, and movies. We watch and look forward to those things every single day. "What's going to happen on tonight's episode of 'Game of Thrones'?" or "When's the next book in the Red Queen Series coming out?" And sometimes the things we loves give us inspiration to set our own path, create our own destiny.
The people who created the things you love were artists. They were creative writers and artists. Our community thrives in the fantastical, not because it's such an awful world we live in, but because dreaming is what we live for. I dream to create stories, and you dream to one day accomplish what sends your heart soaring.
I'm a Creative Writing Major because I believe in hopes and dreams. I believe that anything is possible if I throw myself hard enough at it. When I was a child, books kept me afloat in a world that social anxiety made a living hell, and now I hope I can do the same for someone else. Maybe there is someone out there waiting for a hero, and maybe my words can help them say above the water just a little longer and give them something to love.
I'm not looking to make it big, as everyone thinks that is the only way to make it in the creative business, I'm trying to make a difference. That difference doesn't have to be a tidal wave, it can simply be making someone smile.
And to all the people self conscious of their current goals, whoever you are and what ever you are doing. If someone doesn't think you can do it, prove them wrong. Prove them so wrong, not with words but with actions. Make them eat your dust by proving to them that you could do it and you'll do it again. Because in the end, it doesn't matter who approves, or doesn't, it all matters about how much you love what you do. Because if you didn't enjoy the climb there, you sure as hell aren't going to enjoy the top.
