Nine Reasons College is Better than High School

For those highschoolers who are anxiously awaiting college.

High school was an alright experience for me, but college is phenomenal. I love every single minute I am here and wouldn’t change anything. Here are nine reasons why college is better than high school.

1. Friends

Every night is literally a sleepover. It’s so amazing to barge into your best friend's dorm that’s two feet away. It’s so great coming to college because everyone else is in the same situation not knowing anyone so you’re forced to make friends (which is fabulous)! I have made my best friends here from forced awkward conversation that has grown into amazing friendships.

2. No Judgement

In high school I struggled with my classmates being so judgemental. Everyone in college is so open minded and welcoming. I have never been more confident to be myself. I’m only in my freshman year and I feel as if college has already blossomed me into a better person.

3. The Classes

The classes are based on the career you’re pursuing, so (hopefully) they’re much more interesting. The professors are much more laid back, which can be good if you keep up on your work. Also the classes are not all day. If you need to study in your time break you can! If you need a nap in between classes you can do that too! It’s a lot of work but you have much more time to do it at the university.

4. Roommate

At night when you’re in a crazy, fun, and laughing mood… Your roommate is right next to you doing the same thing. If you’re upset, they’re there to console, to make you laugh, and to threaten to kick whoever's ass who made you feel that way. They’re one of the people you can always count on to hang out with and have a great time. I guess I might be a little biased saying all this because my roommate is awesome.

5. The Food

Okay… So the food is good (maybe not as good as your mom’s homemade stuff), but it is good! The options though are incredible. Whether you’re vegan, vegetarian, or have a food allergy the cafeteria will always have an option for you! Also if you’re trying to eat healthy they have healthier options as well. There is always a variety of food and they’re all great options.

6. The Freedom

This is personally my favorite. It’s so nice not having to ask your parents to do something. You can just walk to your friends dorm and hang out. This is also the most dangerous thing about college because you can’t take advantage of the freedom you’re given. Responsibility is a huge factor! As long as you know your limits of what you can and can’t do, it’s incredible!

7. Dorm Decor

Your room at home is great… But starting over and redecorating your room to your personality is the best. It’s so fun going and picking out all of the decorations. Then setting everything up and seeing it all together is beautiful. Although, admire your dorm when it’s nice and clean because it probably won’t stay that way for long.

8. The Free Stuff

I mean you’re paying an arm and a leg for your education so essentially all of the t-shirts, water bottles, and everything else, isn’t free… But it is nice to think that they are. When you hear they’re handing out free shirts at an event you make sure you are the first one there! I’ve only been at school for a month and I have at least 10 free shirts.

9. The Opportunities

In college I have already had outstanding opportunities. I have several programs I am involved in that have opened up so many doors for me. I have fantastic mentors that are leading me into new opportunities. Staying in the small town I grew up in would never give me these chances.

College has a few flaws (the debt we’ll have when we graduate, cost of textbooks, freshmen 15, etc) but it is more than worth it. I have met so many incredible people already and I can’t wait to meet more. RMU has given me more than I could ever ask for in just the month I have been here. I look forward to the rest of my career here. So far college is the most amazing experience.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.

1. People assume you are mad all of the time.

2. Ten out of ten times you will give off an intimidating impression to others.

3. People do not acknowledge your feelings because you "do not have any."

4. Constantly being exhausted from trying to smile and not look like a witch.

5. And on the rare occasion your facial expressions show how happy you are, your friends think you are going crazy.

6. Each of your friends has said "I thought you were so mean when I first met you" at some point.

7. Then they follow that by saying "you are just hard to read."

8. So naturally if people do not know you they just assume you are a snob.

9. And when you are actually mad, your facial expressions are horrifying.

10. In the end you always look like you are judging people, when in reality people are ALWAYS judging you.
