8 Reasons JMU Is An Experience Like Literally No Other

In This Article:

After stepping foot on James Madison's campus for the first time as a freshman almost two months ago, I noticed I was part of a special atmosphere and an experience unlike other major universities. Here are some reasons why James Madison University is so unique:

1. Opening and holding the door for others

One of James Madison's notable tradition's is always holding the door for your fellow duke behind you. It's an action that is taught the first day of coming to the university. Not only is holding the door respectful, but also represents the caring environment JMU possesses, and unity among your fellow dukes.

2. Football pride

At every football game, the pride is incredible. With every demand from the scoreboard to cheer, the student section erupts into excitement. From the bam bams given out at each football game and the streamers flying over the crowd for each touchdown, contributes to JMU's pride and unifying environment.

3. FROG week

JMU is one of the only universities that had students arrive on campus early to participate in a five-day event called FROG week. This is a time to bond with people on your hall and meet two upperclassmen(First Year Orientation Guide or FROG) that lead you through a series of events. FROG week is very exciting. Some upperclassmen wish they had a FROG week every year too. Enjoy FROG week because you only get one!

4. JMU Family

Wherever you are on campus, you will notice people's motivation to succeed including most of the faculty and staff. There is a reason we have a student success center. There are numerous people willing to help you succeed anytime. This is rare unlike other major universities, where helping students succeed may not be the priority.

5.The Amazing View

Every night is worth seeing the amazing sunsets over the mountains of Harrisonburg and the Shenandoah Valley. The best view is from East Campus on one of the fields and looking towards UREC, the football stadium, and the other side of campus. Seeing the leaves transition to fall in the mountains is also a bonus that other universities can't experience. In addition, the beautiful stone and university's architecture compliment the view.

6. Living in Harrisonburg

Like JMU, Harrisonburg has an influence on the university too. Harrisonburg's values are very similar to the University. Harrisonburg's mission is to be a diverse, inclusive community, accepting of all. Harrisonburg has numerous good restaurants including Clementines, Jack Brown's, and the Capital Ale House. Going to Kline's, walking around on main street, and taking a hike in the Shenandoah National Park are exciting attractions.

7. Party school

Whether you are a partier, non-partier, or somewhere between, JMU always has a party going on.

8. Royal Dukes

Most universities might have really tacky colors like, Virginia Tech's maroon and orange. But JMU's colors are purple and gold. The color purple is associated with "meaning of life and spiritual fulfillment." The color gold is associated with abundance and prosperity, luxury and quality, prestige and sophistication, value and elegance.

Whether you are new to JMU or thinking about applying, consider being part of a unifying community.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
