How I Realized I Appreciate My Campus

I love you, Ohio U!

How I Realized I Appreciate My Campus
Emily Eschliman

This past weekend, I visited a friend at Miami University. No, I am not going to bash the school, in my opinion the rivalry is dumb anyway, considering only OU students care... Honestly, it's true. But while I was at Miami, and don't get me wrong, I had a good time, I realized how much I appreciate being OU and how I know I have picked the right school.

Like I said, I am not going to go on saying Miami sucks. But, I honestly didn't like the campus that much. I had been before because a lot of my family members went there, but I never really remembered much of the campus. From what I explored this weekend, it was a little dull. OU, however, has charm.

I complain about the hills as much as the next person, but you know what, this past weekend made me I realize that I love them. If we didn't have the hills, our campus would seem so much bigger. And that's the thing, Miami's campus just seemed so large. I know it probably isn't, and I was really only there for about two days, but it was so spread out. It made our campus seem so tiny. OU's campus definitely is not tiny, but it feels more tight-knit in a way and has so much character.

I guess some could say that our buildings all look the same, but to me, they don't. That's probably due to the fact that I see them every day. But honestly, all of Miami's campus looked the same to me. Here at OU, we have character and we have charm and I am so grateful for that.

This weekend made me realize that I take my campus for granted sometimes. Now, I never will.

Sure, Miami's dining halls have crepes. Sure, Miami has no hills. Sure, Miami kids can just tap their IDs to get into their residence hall and dorm room. But those things don't compare to Ohio University's beauty. Athens' beauty.

So, I challenge you; go to a different campus and see how it stacks up to yours. If you are having some doubts, maybe you picked the wrong place. But, I know I didn't.

I love you, Athens and I always will.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
