10 Realities Every Girly Tomboy Can Relate To

Some days you wear a dress, some days you wear sweats. It really depends.

As a girly tomboy, it can be tough to defy the 'feminine' stereotype and act in a way seen as contrary to how society believes I should act. Throughout the years, though, I've learned to grow a tough skin by learning how to deal with the struggles of being a girly tomboy.

1. Your sense of style changes on a daily basis

One day you might be wearing booties with leggings and a shirt and perfect makeup, and the next you might be wearing a baggy sweater, leggings, and a beanie. These sudden changes can leave people shocked sometimes when they see you dressed up.

2. You do enjoy dressing up

Since it doesn’t present itself often, dressing up for special occasions can be a great time to play up my girly side, but then I revert back to sweatpants the next day.

3. You don’t wear makeup every day

And when you do have to put on foundation, it can be a struggle. I go most days without wearing a full face of makeup because I think it takes too much time and effort.

4. You prefer practical over fashionable

Sure you have a few pieces to whip out if need be, whether you’re going to a conference or to an interview. Yet, most of your closet consists of practical clothes because you’d rather be comfortable than worrying about your clothes all the time.

5. You aren’t the biggest fan of nail polish

Since I hate when my nail polish chips, I tend to only do my nails when I really feel like devoting the time and effort.

6. You have more guy friends than female friends

This might be hard for some people to understand, but you just prefer hanging out with your guy friends. You do still cherish your time with your female friends, but there’s a difference in how you relate to each other.

7. People often think it’s a phase

Those who think you should act more feminine think this is a ‘phase’ and that you’ll grow out of it soon enough. However, this is who you are and that’s what makes you happy.

8. Short skirts and dresses make you feel uncomfortable

These are your worst nightmare and you hate it when someone suggests you wear a short(er) article of clothing. Again, practicality over fashion wins here: you’d rather be comfortable than trying to hold down your clothes against the wind.

9. You don’t wear makeup to the gym

Unlike those who get dolled up to go to the gym, as a girly tomboy, you can’t imagine doing your makeup and then sweating it all off. What’s worse is, it’s not good for your skin!

10. You don’t pretend to be someone you’re not

Even though some people may not understand your disposition, you’re not trying to impress anyone and you remain true yourself.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
