Realistic New Year Resolutions

Resolutions that will go further than the first week of January

Realistic New Year Resolutions

New Year resolutions can be refreshing to some, but a struggle for most. We go in to the new year with hopes that our resolutions will last us through the entire year. It isn't until the first or second week of January that the challenges of keeping these resolutions in tact hit us and we feel compelled to slip into our old habits. Perhaps the fault isn't in our resolutions, but the high expectations we bring with them. It's difficult attempting to eliminate something completely from your life rather than to set limits to reach your goals. In other words, you allow yourself to occasionally cheat with your resolutions.

The most common new year's resolutions are typically to get fit, eat healthier, travel, etc. We know we say that we can make it all happen now, but realistically life gets in the way and we can't be one hundred percent with fulfilling our resolutions. However resolutions don't have to be a pain to deal with if you place limits. If exercising is one of your resolutions, I suggest setting a goal of two to three times a week instead of every day. Maybe the every day routine simply works on your free days, but a few times a week can allow yourself to spend time accomplishing other things. Another common resolution is to eat better. Now, if you're anything like me, I can't go on with life without the occasional junk food and/or chocolate. Instead of sticking to a brutal diet of lettuce and water, allow yourself to eat a short amount of non-healthy foods a week. I can guarantee you'll still be alright if you eat that slice of pizza...or four. Lastly, traveling is another notorious resolution that some would like to invest in. This resolution doesn't necessarily mean having to see the whole world within the span of a year, however it could be traveling to minor destinations. Perhaps it would be a good time to do that road trip with your friends that you've been talking about or simply travel somewhere that you've never been.

The choice to keep up with your resolutions can only be decided by yourself and it will take some sense of self-discipline. It's important to not be too difficult on yourself and create these over the top expectations. After all the goal is simply to better yourself in some type of way even if it does involve creating limits. Everyone's resolutions should consist of being happy in the new year. A mindset of being open to new possibilities and growth will reward you not only throughout the year, but in the future new years.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
