One of the hardest things in life is probably trying to determine who is a true friend and who isn’t. This is especially hard during high school, when you’re surrounded by a lot of cliquey people, fake people, mean people, etc. Here’s a list of some key aspects to look out for in fake friends and real friends.

Fake Friends:

  1. Will pick apart your physical appearance
  2. Always strives to be better than you
  3. Gives advice that benefits them in any given situation
  4. Only gives backhanded compliments
  5. Goes back on their word
  6. Makes plans with you then cancels to hang out with someone else
  7. Doesn’t invite you to anything
  8. Takes things from you and never returns them
  9. Spends your money but never pays you back
  10. Makes constant degrading comments
  11. Always seems to be too busy for you
  12. Goes on their phone or doesn’t listen when you talk to them
  13. Only does things for you when it’s convenient for them
  14. Makes everything about them
  15. Lies to you

Real Friends:

  1. Will always make you feel great about how you look
  2. Always encourages you to be better
  3. Gives honest advice no matter how painful it may be (and will help you overcome that pain)
  4. Gives genuine compliments
  5. Always keeps their word and never makes excuses
  6. Always keeps plans with you unless they have a good reason why they have to cancel
  7. Makes every effort to include you
  8. Returns anything and everything they borrow from you
  9. Remembers to pay you back for anything they needed your money for
  10. Builds you up and never tears you down
  11. Will always make time for you
  12. Genuinely listens to you whenever you talk to them
  13. Goes out of their way to do things for you- expected or unexpected
  14. Puts you before themselves
  15. Always tells the truth- no matter what.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week.
