Why Reading Is Better Than TV

In today's society, television and internet streaming services are taking over people's free time. Binge watching an entire series is a normal weekend activity for millennials and it's seemingly a great way to unwind and relax. People become so wrapped up in watching movies and TV shows, though, they're forgetting the importance of reading. Reading, which has been around way longer than television, used to be a the best way to relax and learn something new. Instead of staring blankly at a 13 inch MacBook screen, people would read the words printed on a page and watch the characters come to life in their minds. Reading has so many benefits that are often overlooked that can really enhance a person's quality of life.

Reading for only 15 minutes a day has the power to stimulate your brain in a way that can prevent serious diseases such as Alzheimer’s and dementia. By keeping your brain active by reading, there is less of a chance that your brain will lose its strength.

If you're looking to reduce stress, reading is one of the best ways to do so, all while strengthening your brain. Reading is a great distraction from everyday stressors because it transports you to another world.

Reading also is a great way to boost knowledge because it provides tons of information that might come in handy one day.

Building off of gaining knowledge, reading will expand your vocabulary which can make you sound smarter and can help you excel in your career.

With a larger vocabulary, you will also become a better writer. Reading improves writing skills because you learn to emulate well-written pieces in your own writing.

By reading, you are also training your memory. When you read you create new synapses in the brain and are working hard to remember both the plot and the characters of the story.

You will also have a stronger focus and a longer attention span because you are focusing solely on the words you are reading instead of a bunch of smaller tasks.

Although watching Netflix is great in moderation, reading has far more mental benefits. Reading is one of the most valuable things we have in our world. Without it, it would be much harder to communicate ideas and navigate the world. In case you are late on your New Year's Resolution, resolve to read at least 15 minutes a day and you will soon see the amazing results of reading.

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.

Now that it seems “talking” is the new way to date, and will stay that way until another idiotic term is used to describe the people who can’t settle down and just date someone, I feel as if it’s time to go over the unwritten rules of “talking.”

Rule 1. Having feeling without feeling.
