An Open Letter To My Graduating Best Friend
Alex Cirra and Alex Vitulano

My Ginger Best Friend,

Fall of 2014, we took ENV 240, and I remember awkwardly sitting between an obnoxious senior and you. I remember feeling incredibly nervous for classes, and you smiled right at me and starting rambling about something (as per usual). We instantly starting laughing, and before we knew it, we were hanging out all the time. As it turns out, I became friends with that obnoxious senior (sorry, Harrison, but you really did complain too much in that class), and later, I introduced him to you. You guys are now happily dating for more than a year now. Obviously, I'm the world's best matchmaker.

I think we initially bonded because we have the same first name, but then we became even closer when we both declared ourselves Environmental Studies majors. Now, we've taken four classes together, and it's depressing that we won't be in anymore together. Who am I going to sit next to in classes now? More importantly, who's going to help me with Excel?

Our professors call us "Alex squared" or "Alex one and Alex one," and your boyfriend calls his car the "Alexandra Express" because he is constantly driving us around everywhere. I've always liked that you're a year older, but now you're moving onto bigger and better things. I get to watch from the sidelines as I finish up my college years as well. I'm going to miss our midnight drives and early morning coffee runs. You're the older sister I've always wanted, worrying about me, giving me advice and even inviting yourself to third wheel when my boyfriend comes into G-town.

Thankfully, you and Harrison are working locally. Within a month, you bought a car, started paying rent and got hired at an incredible company an hour away. I couldn't be a prouder friend! You're teaching me how to be a grownup whether I like it or not. I hope you walk in for the first day on the job and remember how many people believe in you.

You are fiercely hardworking, insanely dependable and ridiculously funny. You laugh at (most of) my jokes, and together we are the weirdest people I know. You know exactly what you want, and you're not afraid to work for it, which is not something most people can say upon graduating. It feels like just yesterday we became friends. At the same time, it feels like we've known each other forever. Just because you're graduating, I know we won't fall out of each other's lives. I can't wait until we are older and wiser, and we can look back on how stressed we were in college and cringe with embarrassment. I hope we can join forces someday, end climate change and travel to Europe together to follow our Italian, yet pale, ancestral roots.

I know that the next phase of your life will be the best one yet! Don't forget about our crazy times, trying every local Italian restaurant, singing to "Blank Space," studying together (or at least trying to study together) at Flounge and watching "Criminal Minds" and "Law and Order" all day. Thank you for reminding me to have fun and not take life too seriously. Whether it's midnight drives around Geneva, following you around with errands, sitting in Professor's office hours for help, going to formals or all the other crazy adventures I let you convince me to go on with you, these are some of my favorite memories, and HWS will miss you .

In conclusion, congratulations on graduating, Alex. You deserve every ounce of success that's coming your way! Thanks for being my best friend these past two years. You should know that I'll always support with you and have your back!

Love,
Your Brunette Best Friend

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
