An American Girl's Reaction To The Royal Engagement

An American girl is now a royal. I repeat: an American girl is now a royal.

This is not a drill. This is true, people. Meghan Markle – a self-proclaimed California girl, a Northwestern grad, a member of a sorority, a HOLLYWOOD ACTRESS, is marrying into the royal family. In that same regard, PRINCE HARRY IS OFF THE MARKET. Now, what am I supposed to tell my family when they ask who I'm marrying?!

If you're anything like me - a royal-obsessed, tv-binge-watcher, American girl - the news was followed by many dramatic feelings and reactions. As told by the royals themselves:

SCORE FOR THE AMERICANS!

It's obviously incredibly cool for an American to be marrying into the royal family. The fascinations that the US (and really the world) has with the royal family is immense, and now we will see one of our own as a DUTCHESS!

1. Wow, she's doing way better than I am.

"I can't keep a boyfriend, and an American is marrying Prince Harry." Come on, you've thought it.

2. It's the end of an era...

There are no longer any single royals left for our generation. Dreams are crushed, girls everywhere are weeping. We've witnessed the end of our extremely realistic expectations to marry Prince Harry

3. *deep in thought*

What will she wear? What will he wear? What does the queen think? When's the wedding? Is Kate excited? Where will they live?

4. A biracial royal?!

Meghan's father is Caucasian, but her mother is African American. She also studied race in college and has been a great voice in the community. What a time to be alive.

5. Okay, they are really cute...

Admittedly. Two beautiful people. They seem dope, too. *squealing*

6. Omg... A royal was in SUITS.

It's pretty crazy that we can recognize Meghan Markle from Suits. Like, she's going to be Kate Middleton, but she was a Hollywood actress. I don't know why that feels so crazy, but it does. Like our own Princess of California.

7. A feminist in the family.

Meghan Markle has been a kick-ass humanitarian and open advocate for feminism and people of color. Markle said, "I've never wanted to be a lady who lunches -- I've always wanted to be a woman who works." Can I get a HELL YES.

8. ...that being said, I'm so happy for them.

It's great to see Prince Harry happy! I wish them both a lifetime of happiness. I can't wait to see the great things they do together. (Sure, it may be partly in vain. I am so eager for some cross between California girl fashion and royal fashion. Bring it on.)

I can't wait to adjust myself to London time and stay up all night to watch the wedding. Wine and cheese at my place. You're all invited.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
