Praying without action is useless

Reaction To The Orlando Shooting
St. Cloud Visitor

We're all saddened by the recent events in Orlando both the shooting at the Pulse nightclub, and the shooting of Christina Grimmie at a meet-and-greet outside of the venue she was performing at.

Nothing was said after the Christina Grimmie incident mainly because people didn't have enough time to really react to what had happened since the very next night there was the mass shooting of the Pulse nightclub. After the nightclub incident many of our politicians took to Twitter tweeting things like #PrayforOrlando. While this is not a bad thing in and of itself, why are you saying this if you're not going to do anything about it?

Prayer can be a good thing. It can give you clarity, knowledge, peace of mind and it can be used to help make people who are suffering emotionally. It gives them an opportunity and a chance to begin to heal. But prayer in regards to a tragedy like this is fine, as long as you have an idea of what you can do to make sure that something like this doesn't happen again.

Now praying and sitting back and expecting that God is going to fix everything at this day in age is delusional. That's just not how the world works anymore, maybe it did back in the day of Abraham, and in the teachings of Jesus and the formation of the Church. I don't know, I wasn't actually there, so because of that I can't tell you. What I can tell you is that in today's society all of the world changing acts that happen are caused by normal people like you and me. Whether you believe that it's because of their moral compass or because you feel that they were commissioned by God to go out and change the world those acts are done by your average person.

Now what these actions are is dependent on the situation that caused them to be necessary. In regards to the incidents in Orlando a lot of people have taken to social media to call for some form of stricter gun control because nobody should be able to commit a massacre of any kind. The issue here is that on both sides of the political spectrum nobody seems to want to compromise to try and find a solution to this issue of mass shootings and gun violence.

When you go and pray about these situations at the end of it all you really need to have some sense of a plan of action that you are capable of doing. That can be as simple as going onto Facebook, Twitter and any other social networking sites and sharing posts about this issue, or it can be as complex as planning a rally around a certain topic. Whatever it is, after prayer you should have a form of action that you plan to take. The absolute worst thing that you can do is to sit back and do absolutely nothing because that is utterly useless.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
