I swear when I started watching this game, I had high hopes for both teams. I didn't expect the game to feel so lopsided each half that I you could tell exactly what would happen. I also did not think I would be in as much agony as I was at the end of Super Bowl 49, where the Seattle Seahawks blew the game with one play. And yet here I am, a mere couple hours after Super Bowl 51 ended still disappointed.
Now let me explain why I'm so dismayed about the outcome of this game. First of all I'm a big sports fan. Anyone that knows me, knows that I will drop plans for whatever game is most important and on TV that night. Many nights you will find me either in front of my computer or the TV watching some hockey, basketball, baseball, or football depending on the season. So because I watch a lot of games, I can tell when one has a good timeline that makes for a great game. One that is easy to write about and discuss. Or one that you can barely keep your eyes on and are kind of glad when it's over. Which is exactly what Super Bowl 51 felt like.
I've also lived in Indiana my whole life and now live in Indianapolis, the home of the Colts organization. And if there is one thing that has been instilled in me from living around Colts fans, is that you hate the Patriots no matter what. I also have very little love lost for Tom Brady. Even though he's an incredible player on the field, off the field he's kind of a terrible person. That will always rub me the wrong way no matter how talented the player is at their chosen sport. Obviously the outcome of this game for this reason alone would be agitating. Yet lets go back to the first point I brought up.
When you look at the game as a whole, this was not a good game to watch. Don't get me wrong, the game started out promising and ended in dramatic fashion. Yet for around fifty minutes of game time many were disinterested and instead taking to social media to post memes and make comments. I know I was in that boat after about the second quarter. During the first quarter the game went back and forth. Both the Patriots and the Falcons were making great defensive stops, having several people wondering if anyone would score anytime soon.
After that the Atlanta Falcons started to pull away from the Patriots. It became very one sided as the Falcons racked up points, leaving the Patriots wondering how to get back in the game. My favorite moment of this was towards the end of the half when Atlanta was able to pull of a pick six which is the defense returning an interception for those of you unsure. At this point I was starting to no longer be interested in the game. It looked like Atlanta could have it in the bag if they were able to continue the pressure in the second half.
Which the Falcons did for at least half of the 3rd quarter. Coming into the second half with a 21-3 lead, former Indiana running back Tevin Coleman extended the team's lead to 25 points. After that though, it was all downhill from there for Atlanta. While the Patriots finally figured out how to solve the Falcon's defense which had boxed them out the entire first half.
From there the Patriots would go on to score 25 unanswered points, with 19 of those coming in the last 10 minutes of the 4th quarter. This was where I started to drop back off again. With about five or so minutes left in regulation, I could tell that the Patriots were going to win the game. It felt too much like the second quarter had for the Falcons to deny that New England would run right through them. Especially after Matt Ryan took a sack late in the game, losing enough yardage that it pushed the Falcons out of field goal range.
All in all for me it was not a very interesting game. The momentum shifts weren't changing enough throughout the game to keep me watching. There was one shift from Atlanta to New England towards the end of the 3rd quarter, and that was it. Before it was all about the Falcons. Then it became the Patriots and that was that.
For me that isn't the type of game I want to watch. Especially if it's the last game of the season until September. I would much rather have an all out fight throughout the game. With the scoring being so back and forth that you can't even tell who would win without a psychic. Obviously this Super Bowl was nowhere near that level of intensity, even at the end.
Overall it felt like a disappointing end to the NFL season. Which I guess kind of makes sense, as this season of NFL football was not nearly as good as usual. It also reinforces for me why I prefer the series format when it comes to the postseason for sports. Having a seven game series where each team can make up for one bad game will always make more sense to me. Then more emphasis is put on the constancy of play instead of just one game being elevated to such importance. Maybe in the future the NFL will switch to that format to be the same as the NBA, MLB, and NHL.
That's how I felt about Super Bowl 51. The ending was interesting, but as a whole the game was boring. Not a game that I would want to watch again at any point. Did you feel the same way I did about this Super Bowl? Or did you think it was the best football game you've ever watched? Let me know, I would love to discuss with you about the game. Now comes the dreaded wait until September when football begins its season again.
