Beyonce just recently dropped her new visual album titled Lemonade and the world is in such a frenzy. She openly reveals that her husband, rapper Jay-Z, cheated on her. Yes, y'all. Queen Bee herself got cheated on. Sounds so.. unbelievable huh? Who in their right mind would cheat on Beyonce?!
At first, I couldn't believe that Jay cheated on Beyonce, but after awhile I became not so surprised. We tend to think of celebrities as different people but in reality, they are just like everybody else. She sings about how she was lied to and I know we have all been there at least once in our lives. She sings to tell us how Jay-Z was coming home late at night and she just heard excuse after excuse. It's so hurtful to see because as women, this is what we go through frequently by the men we tend to love so much.
When watching the album, Beyonce takes us on a visceral experience as she displays the many emotions she's felt because of heartbreak. It's an hour long but definitely worth to watch. She goes from scorn, to happy, to forgiving all within one hour. It's truly a piece of art.
Not only did she take us on her emotional stages, but she is also bringing awareness of how it is to be a black woman in today's society. One of Malcolm X's famous quotes is about the black woman, and she had it played during the beginning of "Don't Hurt Yourself." "The most disrespected person in America is the black woman. The most unprotected person in America is the black woman. The most neglected person in America is the black woman." She gracefully portrays black culture as a whole so unapologetically. And that is what we call black girl magic.
Lemonade is a cry for resilience, love and hope. I am happy that Beyonce was able to capture so much heartfelt emotion about her marriage and even political issues. I am definitely here for this.
