I have always had an interest in fashion. To me, fashion is not just art you can wear, but a way to express yourself. My passion for clothing is honestly so much of a problem that I can sincerely say it's where most of my money goes (I work in a clothing store, it's so hard for me to have self-control!!). I have developed my own sense in fashion over the years, one that's unique to me and allows me to express who I am. I prefer to combine what's in with a vintage flair.
My boyfriend has his own fashion sense, but it's one he describes as "bland, boring, and grey". His words!!! From my perspective, it was a simple style filled with cargo shorts and American Eagle labeled T's. Personally, I think his fashion was his own: cute and simple. Obviously, he begs to differ. He has been begging me to help him go shopping, and with leftover birthday money, that's exactly what we did!!
The most important thing to keep in mind while helping someone re-shape their wardrobe is that everyone has their own sense of style. It's not about what you like on someone, but what makes them feel confident and comfortable. Tan France is one of my remodels so while shopping with my boyfriend, I kept his demeanor within me in order to make it the best experience possible. Another important thing is to help whoever you are shopping with/for dip their toe in other realms of style. Help them explore, but don't suggest things too far from what they've been sticking with. I tried to incorporate my boyfriend's old style with things that would be different for him, but not alarmingly different.
With this mentality, we ended up with an armful of unique graphic t-shirts. The best part is he ended up liking quite a few of them! He found a few that gave him a pop of color, others a cool graphic he wouldn't have gone with if he wouldn't have stepped outside of his clothing comfort zone. Now, my boyfriend claims he feels so good, he could take on the world! *wink* And why? Because finding your style is so much more about looks. It's about feeling good and saying so much about yourself without saying anything at all.
