Rating Characters in Shameless Based on Sass

Shameless has been a constant favorite in college campuses around the country. Between it’s against the norm characters and very taboo plot lines, kids connect to the characters despite how different they usually are. Shameless features six kids raising themselves as their mom ditched them, and their father, Frank, is a drunk. The show has a very dry comedy to it, using the show as a source of rhetoric for society, so you can see how the sass and comedy could run rampant. The following is ten main characters rated from least to most sassy. (I must admit, I am only on season three, but I’ve got a pretty good idea so far.

10) Sheila

While Sheila is not one of the primary nine characters of the show, she has to make the list. She is the least sassy person in the show because of how entertaining her inability to pick up on sarcasm is. Frank could say just about any rude kind of comment to Sheila, and she just let’s it go, mostly because she doesn’t get it. Also the whole beginning plot where she didn’t realize what her baby Karen was doing with Lip and Ian… strange woman but we love her the way she is.

9) Liam

We don’t hold Liam’s lack of sass against him, because I’m sure it will come. But when a character can’t talk yet, he’s gotta be at the bottom of the list somewhere. He’s above Sheila because sometime’s just the faces Liam makes at his siblings, you can tell her just gets it already.

8) Carl

Carl keeps the audience on their feet because of his crazy antics and inability to tell right from wrong. He has his moments where he can slam someone with some sarcasm in just the right way, but his comedic abilities are still growing. He’ll learn from him older brothers soon enough.

7) Veronica

One of the two main characters who aren’t Gallaghers, Veronica is a mother figure of the group. While she is Fiona’s best friend, she is a rock to every child in the Gallagher family. Her sass doesn’t show as much to the kids, but when she is with her boyfriend Kev, she is constantly smacking him in the face with jokes and sarcasm. Their love is so wonderful and real, covered in jokes and humor, they’re truly best friends but with a spark that won’t go out.

6) Kev

It’s incredible the sexist, racist, and homophobic jokes that Kev deals with at the Alibi everyday. Kev is funny and a good role model to all of the kids in the Gallagher house, and he and V paired together gives everyone a relationship to strive for. His humor is so pure because most of the time, the funny things he say strive from him not being the brightest. For example, when he said “Circle doesn’t start with an S? WTF is this??” It’s easy to tell he’s a sweetheart, and he’s funny on accident, which is even better.

5) Debbie

Debbie has the best budding sense of humor. From the first episode of the show you can see that when she says; “Carl, you’re almost nine, it’s time to start pulling your weight.” She goes to a man’s mother and asks; “Are you screwing my sister's boyfriend?” She beats her dad with a pillow case of soap for disappointing her. The gold she has never ends because of how old and refined her humor is for such a young age.

4) Ian

I loved Ian from the first episode and the storyline he brings to show. Between him and Mickey, him and Kash, every person he choses to pursue a relationship with brings something to not just his life, but the whole family's life. The reason Ian is so high on the list is because of his constant banter with Lip. With others, Ian is a very ROTC man, who stands straight and does as he’s told, but with Lip, a more relaxed side of Ian is shown, with sarcastic lines such as; “Yeah, and we’re only given our lungs to smoke, right?” He has a great sense of humor that always has perfect timing.

3) Frank

Not to say his humor is in good taste EVER, but Frank has some interesting things to say about the world. One of his more culturally sensitive comedic lines was definitely “Choose a gender and find someone who wants to f***. Preferably for free.” One of his funny interactions with Sheila includes her saying “Frank! I want to us to see the world!” to which, Frank says “I’ve seen it. It’s a piece of s***.” In every episode Frank has drunken, inappropriate, hysterical things to say.

2) Fiona

Of course Fiona has to be one of the sassiest of them all, she’s a 20 something year old girl who is raising six kids, none of which are hers. She works a million different odd jobs, and seems to have serious problems with finding a good healthy relationship. There’s no proof needed that this girl need a sassy coping mechanism, so I’ll just leave you with a great quote to represent Fiona;

Frank: All I had to do was pull out and you would have never been born.

Fiona: You were too high to pull out.

  1. Lip

This is an obvious first choice, and if you disagree, you haven’t seen enough of the show yet. His bitterness towards the world and most of the people around him shows in almost every sentence he says. It’s difficult, because he’s always the smartest guy in the room, and he has a quiet motivation that he can’t quite push forward all of the time. He’s a great brother, a great friend, sassy and hysterical. To finish this list, I’ll leave you with a great quote from Lip from the first episode of the television series: “If you talk out of your a** with that much conviction, you’re gonna need a bigger toothbrush.”

IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN SHAMELESS YET, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU DO. ALL SEVEN SEASONS ON NETFLIX!! :)

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
