My favorite type of musicals are the uncommon ones. Sure, I adore Hamilton, Fiddler on the Roof, Les Miserables, all those incredibly common musicals, but the rare gems have a special energy to them. Although I may be a bit biased (especially since my high school has put on three of these), here are five musicals that I think all theater kids should know.
1. The Drowsy Chaperone
When I heard that my high school would put on this musical my Junior year, I was disappointed to say the least. I had never heard of it, the storyline seemed strange, some of the songs sounded quite odd (such as Bride's Lament...it's literally about comparing her finance to a monkey). I was proven completely wrong when we performed this show. It's hilarious, there are so many interesting characters, it's a great length, and crowds of all ages will enjoy this show.
2. Brigadoon
The premise of this show is mysterious and magical, but I believe that the music is what is truly beautiful about this show. It has a more Rodger's and Hammerstein feel to it, which makes it unique from dozens of more recent musicals. It has a charming main love story, and who doesn't want to spend a day in the quaint town of Brigadoon? Plus, much of the story is told through dance, so it's a dream of a show for dancers.
3. The Spitfire Grill
This show needs to be better known. It is magnificent in story and music, with mature themes, but it also elements of humor. It features music with a more modern feel but doesn't sacrifice the raw humanness of the characters. The storyline is incredibly realistic, yet still takes audiences away to Maine for a few hours. Audiences learn more and more about each character as the story unfolds but in unexpected ways.
4. The Gifts of the Magi
This is just a fun show. Based off of the story by O'Henry, this musical has a smaller cast, something that's not as common in musicals. It's full of music, fun characters, and engaging themes. Just like the Drowsy Chaperone, I was absolutely a surprised to hear that my high school would put this musical on the fall of my Sophomore year, but I was again proven wrong after learning how wonderful this show truly is.
5. Little Women the Musical
Okay, this is a little more common, but it's still one of my favorites. Just like the Gifts of the Magi, it has a smaller cast but showcases the importance of staying true to yourself and family. I find the music to be fun and the perfect ratio of ballads to upbeat songs. Even better, it's a great show for all ages.
