Our society is extremely engulfed in lives that aren't our own. Social media allows for us to have access to the latest on celebrities we adore. Of course, as a typical teenage girl in 2016, I have my fair share of obsessions relating to musicians and actors, but I know my limits, whereas some people believe that celebrities "lost their right to privacy" the minute they decided to share their lives for us all to see.
Social media gives people a platform to share whatever they want, meaning posts, photos, etc., can easily be fabricated. People photo-shop, lie about things they do, and spread false rumors (the most harmful in my opinion). Since it's the internet, rumors can easily be spread and people will believe them no matter what. Entertainment sites take anything and everything and blow it out of proportion just so they can have a good story for the day. While their site is being talked about because they were the first people to talk about the 'scandal,' the celebrity's image is at stake.
Activities that celebrities engage in become a way larger deal than if an average person were to do it. For instance, if someone who lived an everyday normal life got injections, piercings, tattoos, etc., there would be no problem. They would not be shamed for their injections, nor would they be told that their piercings and tattoos make them look trashy. However, if Kylie Jenner were to get lip injections, it would become a trending topic on Twitter within minutes and constant hate comments about her being 'fake' and 'only pretty because of her money' would pop up.
Our society is so desperate to get involved in other people's lives and problems that their problems are actual headlines on dozens of entertainment websites, like how Kim Kardashian faked her own robbery just to get her butt reduced. The sole idea that people believe this is beyond me, but the fact that people are bashing on her and calling her a liar about something that could have legitimately ended with her dying is disgusting. The day the news of her robbery came out, people were saying more hateful comments to her than I had ever seen. Tweets like "she should have died" or "who cares it's not like she has a talent" were spreading like wildfire on social media. People were wishing that a person with two young kids and a husband was dead. People were wishing that something that has most likely affected her everyday life actually happened. Would we wish an average mom with two kids and a husband death if we saw that she died in a robbery? Or is it only because we are now so desperate for something to gossip and debate about that we go around sending death wishes to people who are the same as us?
Now, I'm not saying that the Kardashian-Jenner clan are the only people whose lives are exploited for the pleasure of others. People like Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber, and more constantly have rumors spread about them. Entertainment websites wait for celebrities to do one small thing so that they can hurry back to their screens and type another false article that will have the rest of us who blindly wait for false news we think is true to come out.
Of course, I understand that people who chose to be famous chose it knowing what would happen, but it never should have gotten to where it has today. It shouldn't be something we need to hear about everyday. People are living their lives through constant rumors of people of a higher status than themselves and are spending their time tweeting ridiculously horrible things. What no one seems to notice is that, no matter how many mean tweets you send, they are still making money and living the life. You're just blindly watching them do it.
