With WrestleMania 32 only a few days away, I felt it would be appropriate to take a trip down memory lane and look at what I believe are the top nine best WrestleMania's in WWE's illustrious history. Now before I begin I would like to stress that these are only my personal picks, so please feel free to agree or disagree with me.
9. WrestleMania X (1994)
Kicking off the list is WWE's tenth anniversary of its biggest spectacle that took place at the home of the first WrestleMania, Madison Square Garden. Kicked off with an epic and classic battle of brother against brother as Owen Hart shocked the world and defeated his brother, Bret on the biggest stage of them all. The Hitman however would overcome this defeat later in the night when he captured the WWE Championship in the main event, defeating the dominant Yokozuna.
This event also featured other notable moments such as the final WrestleMania appearance of late WWE Hall of Famer, Macho Man Randy Savage, as well as being one of the only times that the WWE Championship was actually defended twice on the same night as Yokozuna also defended his title against the "All-American" Lex Luger early on.
But what this event is most remembered for is the epic ladder match for the Intercontinental Championship between "The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels and the "Bad Guy" Razor Ramon. This is the match that single-handedly put the ladder match on the map. The groundbreaking performance of both superstars created one of the WWE's most shown highlights and one of WrestleMania's grandest moments in its illustrious history.
8. WrestleMania XX (2004)
WWE's twentieth anniversary of its biggest show, just like WrestleMania X, also took place at the sacred grounds of Madison Square Garden. And just like it did ten years prior, this event created even more memorable moments such as John Cena capturing his first championship, the United States Championship, the return of the Rock'N'Sock Connection to take on Evolution, even the infamous battle (or lack of) between Goldberg and Brock Lesnar.
A big highlight of this show was also the Undertaker's spectacular return to his Deadman persona; making a grand return to the Garden to battle his brother Kane. Another highlight was the classic WWE Championship between Kurt Angle and Eddie Guerrero, two amazing performers showing why they belonged in one of WrestleMania's main events. But the biggest moment of this show was the amazing main event triple threat match for the World Heavyweight Championship; Triple H taking on the challenge of Shawn Michaels and Chris Benoit.
For me personally, it was a great pleasure to be able to see Benoit, who had worked his butt off for eighteen years to finally get to the big stage, be able to claim victory and become the World Heavyweight Champion. Not only was this match a classic and in my opinion one of the greatest main events in WrestleMania history, but it also created what is my all time favorite WrestleMania moment ever.
After finally winning the World Heavyweight Championship, Benoit was greeted in the ring by his best friend and WWE Champion, Eddie Guerrero. The two embraced in the middle of the ring and shed tears of joy as they had both finally made it to the biggest stage of them all and were on top. This moment will always stand as my all time favorite WrestleMania moment and is what topped off a great show.
7. WrestleMania 24 (2008)
WWE has always been able to make WrestleMania the Biggest Spectacle of them all not only by creating memorable moments but also by the look of the show as well. The sets of WrestleMania's are always spectacular and seem to get better every year but the one year that really shined was 2008's WrestleMania 24. Having taken place inside aged the Citrus Bowl, WWE had quite a task on their hands to make the old unappealing building look presentable and they did just that and more.
They gave the entire venue a much-needed makeover and showed why the WWE production is great at what they do. But of course, this event is memorable not only for its presentation but also for the great moments it created, including CM Punk winning Money in the Bank for the first time, the classic triple threat match between John Cena, Randy Orton, and Triple, as well as the epic main event between The Undertaker and Edge for the World Heavyweight Championship. But two key moments really stand out on this show.
The first being the battle between the Largest Athlete in the World, The Big Show and the greatest boxer in the world, Floyd "Money" Maywether which not only brought in the interest of wrestling and boxing fans but also all sports fans. The media attention surrounding this match was insane and what also makes this match standout was that it delivered and created a classic WrestleMania moment.
As great as that moment was however, the greatest and most and emotional moment that this event created was the match between Shawn Michaels and Ric Flair where if Flair lost, he had to retire. This match sent the WWE audience on a emotional roller coaster as fans were on the edge of their seats as these two masters of the ring created another classic WrestleMania match.
The final moments of the match were the most tear jerking moments in wrestling as Shawn Michaels torn looked upon his friend Ric Flair and uttered the words, "I'm sorry. I love you" before pulling the trigger and ended Flair's 35 year career. I know that after this match that there was not a dry eye in the Citrus Bowl that night (don't try to deny it). This event created many classic moments but it was the final of one of the all time greats that earned this events spot on this list.
6. WrestleMania 26 (2010)
2010 brought upon one of WWE's most anticipated WrestleMania events yet. A match between the two biggest stars in the company, John Cena and Batista for the WWE Championship, Edge and Chris Jericho facing off in a classic bout for the World Heavyweight Championship, and topped off with one of the most anticipated main events in WrestleMania history; the epic rematch from their classic the year before, as Shawn Michaels faced The Undertaker where The Undertaker's WrestleMania undefeated streak was on the line against Michaels' twenty-five year career.
You may have noticed that Shawn Michaels has appeared in a number of these event already and has also been involved in some of the most notable moments. That is because Michaels has deservedly earned the moniker of "Mr. WrestleMania" a nicknamed he earned for his outstanding performance on the grandest stage of them all. Every match that Michaels has been involved with on the grand stage has always stolen the show and been named "match of the night."
And this match was no exception as Michaels once again gave another show stealing performance as he fought The Undertaker with everything he had but ultimately fell victim to the Phenom's undefeated streak. Just like his friend Ric Flair, the Heartbreak Kid also had his final match at WrestleMania and even in defeat, Michaels still proved why he earned the name of Mr. WrestleMania.
5. WrestleMania 23 (2007)
Having already previously discussed this show in my retrospective of the first WrestleMania I ever watched, I won't go into too much detail here. The top matches on this show were John Cena defending his WWE Championship against Shawn Michaels (yeah him again), Batista defending his World Heavyweight Championship against The Undertaker (notice anything there?) and the Battle of the Billionaires as Vince McMahon's representative Umaga battled ECW Champion and Trump supporter (hopefully not for president) Bobby Lashley. A fun show that delivered on all counts and made me realize the magnitude and true importance of WrestleMania.
4. WrestleMania 31 (2015)
I remember last year feeling different than usual about this WrestleMania. To be completely honest my expectations for this show were not too high due in part to the terrible job the WWE did of hyping up this event with ridiculous and just stupid storylines. However, they once again proved me wrong with this show. The crazy nonstop action of the opening ladder match for the Intercontinental championship did a great job of getting me pumped for the show.
Then came the awesome moment of Randy Orton pulling his trademark RKO in mid air on the self-proclaimed "Future of the WWE" Seth Rollins. If you haven't seen this yet google or youtube it, you won't regret it I promise. Then came the much anticipated match-up between Triple H and the Icon Sting. Run-ins from DX and the nWo helped bring in the nostalgia factor along with the anticipation of Sting's first ever match in the WWE. Following would be a classic USA vs. Russia war between John Cena and Rusev which featured Rusev coming out to the ring on a tank. Then came the return of the Undertaker taking on the mysterious Bray Wyatt.
And of course there was the main event featuring Brock Lesnar defending his WWE World Heavyweight Title against the young up and coming Roman Reigns. I know it's become a cliche but these two men really went to war in this match. They beat the holy you know what out of each other and Lesnar proved why he was called the Beast Incarnate but Reigns also showed he could hang in there with the Beast but what really set it off was the surprising appearance of Seth Rollins. Rollins was in possession of the Money in the Bank briefcase, which guaranteed him a championship match any time any place.
And what better place than WrestleMania. Rollins picked the opportune moment and capitalized becoming the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion closing what turned out to be a pretty great WrestleMania.
3. WrestleMania 19 (2003)
WrestleMania 19 provided the culmination of some of the WWE's biggest rivalries including match twenty years in the making between the "Immortal" Hulk Hogan against WWE Chairman Vince McMahon in a grueling street fight as well as the final chapter in the storied rivalry between WWE's two biggest stars, Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock.
This show also featured another show-stealing performance by (you guessed it) Shawn Michaels as he took on Chris Jericho in a great match of mentor vs student as well as the main event for the WWE Championship featuring two of WWE's greatest athletes Kurt Angle and Brock Lesnar who put on a classic for the biggest prize in the game. The match between Austin and Rock not was not only the final match of their rivalry but also the final match for Stone Cold Steve Austin. This showed not only proved to be another great chapter in WrestleMania history but also in WWE history.
2. WrestleMania 21 (2005)
WrestleMania 21 was the year WrestleMania went Hollywood. Accompanied by creative and funny vignettes that parodied many classic films like Forrest Gump and Pulp Fiction, this show was one of the most anticipapted events of that year. It was a crucial show in WWE's history as this night proved to be a changing of the guard for the company. This show was filled with great moments kicking off with the technical classic between Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio, the debut of the Money in the Bank ladder match, a great match for the streak as Randy Orton unsuccessfully took a shot at ending The Undertaker's legendary undefeated streak, and of course the classic show stealing match featuring Shawn Michaels (who else would it be?) taking on Kurt Angle in one of the best matches in WrestleMania history.
The Heartbreak Kid and the Olympic Gold Medalist proved why they are considered the two greatest performers in WWE history. Also featuring the return of Legend Hulk Hogan to a thunderous ovation from the fans inside the Staples Center. New stars were crowned on this night as both John Cena and Batista claimed their rightful place on the top of the WWE food chain by claiming the WWE and World Heavyweight championships respectively, cementing their status as the top stars in the company. This event was epic from start to finish, filled with classic matches, classic moments and proving to be one of the best events the WWE has produced and showed why WrestleMania is called the Biggest Show of the Them All.
1. WrestleMania X-Seven (2001)
At this point, the WWE was riding a tidal wave of momentum. The Attitude Era as it was called made the WWE the most popular it had ever been with millions and millions of fans tuning in each week to see what would happen next. Prior to this event, the WWE had just purchased their main competitor WCW and came out on top in the Monday Night Wars. So it only made sense that the biggest show of this Era take the top spot. The seventeenth edition of WrestleMania proved to not only be the best WrestleMania of all time but the best WWE pay-per-view of all time.
This show was incredible from top to bottom with the exception of two matches but even with them this show was still great. Starting with Chris Jericho taking on William Regal for the Intercontinental Title followed by the insane triple threat match for the Hardcore Championship as well as a great technical bout between Chris Benoit and Kurt Angle, the two best ring technicians of all time. This show also featured a bout between father and son as Shane McMahon fought his own father Vince McMahon with WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley as the special guest referee. Then there was the incredible Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match for the WWE Tag Team Title featuring the Hardy Boyz, Edge and Christian and the Dudley Boyz. This match showed six hungry superstars putting their bodies on the line giving a show stealing performance and creating highlights that have been replayed over and over again in WWE history.
Following this would be the epic battle between Triple H and The Undertaker as Taker once again proved why he is called the Phenom defeating the Game in a classic for the ages. And then of course there was the main event. The Biggest Main Event in history. The two most popular stars of the entire Attitude Era, Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock fighting to prove who was really number one. The two had a classic bout for the ages and a match I consider the second best match in WrestleMania history (number one goes to Shawn Michaels and the Undertaker at WrestleMania 25). What also made this match stand out was the shock at the end as the face of the Attitude Era, Stone Cold Steve Austin turned his back on the WWE Universe and aligned himself with his arch rival, Vince McMahon.
Many consider this moment and this event as the end of the Attitude Era as now with WCW and ECW both out of business the WWE reigned supreme as the only show in town and what a way for that era to go out than with an event like this making this, the Greatest WrestleMania of all Time.
Writing this piece and going back and re-watching some of these great moments made me remember why I love WWE so much and why WrestleMania is the biggest show of the year. Now again these are just my personal picks and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Regardless of which WrestleMania is the best of all time, we can all agree that WrestleMania is the show of shows and the best part about being a pro wrestling fan. To the fans out there reading this, I hope you go back and rewatch these great moments and get yourself hyped for this year's event, WrestleMania 32!
