Well, we have reached that time of the year. The weather is finally starting to cool down, it’s time to pull out our sweaters and vests and prepare to deck the halls in just a few short weeks. But in the meantime, we must not overlook one of the best days of the year: Thanksgiving. Not only is it a day full of being thankful and spending time with friends and family, the day includes THE BIGGEST FEAST OF THE YEAR. So, I have for you, the definitive ranking of all the classic Thanksgiving menu items.
10. Cranberry Sauce
Why is this even a Thanksgiving food? It seems like the fancy, glass bowl full of cranberry sauce simply sits on the table - does anyone even eat it? Maybe Grandpa will smear some on top of his turkey. Clearly, this deserves its place at the bottom of the list.
9. Green Bean Casserole
Another side-dish that makes me wonder why it’s even a Thanksgiving food. The dish of tough green beans mixed with crunchy onions and mushrooms seems completely unrelated to the rest of the meal’s side dishes.
8. Creamed Corn
But really, who ever thought it was a good idea to mix corn and cream to make such a rich dish?
7. Sweet Potatoes
I feel like this is one where you love it or hate it. I am personally not a fan, but I understand the beauty of the piles of marshmallows and brown sugar attempting to be a vegetable. (I’m starting to see a trend - that all of the vegetables at the end of this list…)
6. Turkey
Although this is supposed to be the “star” of the meal, we all know that turkey is definitely not the favorite dish of the day. Whether you like light meat or dark, turkey just doesn’t match up to some of the other Turkey Day foods.
5. Pie
Is it socially acceptable to have an entire pie to myself? The warm, pumpkin pie covered in smears of whipped cream just screams Thanksgiving. Pumpkin definitely beats pecan, but either way you can’t go wrong.
4. Ham
HoneyBaked Hams are THE BEST. The sweet, cinnamony crust on the ham makes this a star dish. Honestly, this holiday should be called “Ham Day” instead of Turkey Day.
3. Mashed Potatoes
Need I say anymore?
2. Stuffing/Dressing
The moist bread crumbs that have spent all day inside the turkey, baking to perfection. I don’t think I’ve ever met someone who didn’t like stuffing. It is the best actual food item on Thanksgiving Day.
1. Gravy
Although it is technically not its own dish, but rather, a complement to the other dishes, gravy is, by far, the best Thanksgiving food. Its versatility and smooth perfection makes it the star of the meal. Pick up that gravy boat and pour that deliciousness all over everything on your plate.
Thanksgiving is a wonderful day for friends, family, and food. Spend your day laughing, reflecting, and putting yourself in a 3-day long food coma after indulging in your favorite Turkey Day foods.
