What is it about going to college that causes students to feel as if they're being pushed off the edge? Some blame helicopter parenting. Most say it's the pressures of society that push you towards a career and economic success--but that same pressure says, "if you don't accomplish these things, you're a failure and no one wants anything to do with you."
Social media is also to blame. It is common for students to see others on Instagram enjoying a night of partying while they are stuck in their dorms with no one to hang out with. It has been known to take a toll on students, as it causes them to feel worthless that no one calls to invite them out anywhere.
Not everything you see online holds true to reality. That girl on Tumblr that you see laughing, drinking and looking absolutely fabulous sees a psychiatrist once a week for self-esteem and anxiety issues. The boy on Twitter, tweeting about how amazing his night is going with all these people is actually going through a tough time while his parents are getting divorced.
Students need to find a way to snap out of thinking so low of their lives; college is really just college and "not the end of the world." While some say college is meant to be the best time of your life, for others, their life after college turns out to be greater. These people are the ones who stayed in studying those nights while everyone went out to party. These people knew better than to get drunk every night before a final exam. These people didn't look into what everyone else was doing; instead, these people remained their true selves rather than putting up perfect images that hid their reality from everyone else.
So here's the thing:
- If your whole world feels like it's crashing down on you and there's no way out,
- If each day feels like a year,
- If people and situations and even family are too much to handle,
- If you haven't laughed your hardest in months,
- If all you feel is alone,
- If there's no part of you that you're proud of,
- If you feel there's nothing in life that can make you any better than you are now,
- If you feel you haven't done enough (what even defines "enough"?),
- If music isn't even on your side,
...then you are wrong.
You are dead wrong, and you need to believe these words because I have my entire mind and soul betting on you to be a better person than you currently think you are. You need to be a better person for the last thing that made happy, whatever it was. It was something that, for a split second, gave you hope for humanity and eternity and for one second made you forget about your horrors and you cracked the most beautiful and only thing a person should crack: a smile.
Every part of you needs to realize that each soul in this lifetime, especially your own, has a purpose and has a value and every soul is given the opportunity to allow for its worth to grow and flourish freely, despite all the obstacles society and life and reality bashes at you.
You are so worth all of it, and your first step in realizing it is by talking. Know that there is a person walking the earth who would gladly reach their hand out toward you. Please go and speak to someone because I promise with my entirety that it would be worth it, whether it's something that helps, or whether it ends up being the spark that will lead to something even greater. Know that it's a start, and it's a start that is worth taking. You will find your way and you will get through it. I promise.
