I had heard a lot about rainbow bagels. Yes, I watched the two minute video on how they were made, drooled a little, and then told myself I would one day travel to Brooklyn, NY and taste the fabulous creation that is a rainbow bagel. And then I forgot about these mystical novelties until they made their way into my dorm room.
I have a roommate from New York whose mother occasionally sends her fantastic treats, from homemade bread to decorated cookies. And then her lovely mother sent her a few of these psychedelic bagels. I rejoiced as she offered me one, eager to taste the epitome of bagels and feel like a rainbow-eating unicorn for once in my life. As she handed me a bagel, I took approximately 30 photos from various angles and then ripped off a piece of the bagel, marveling at the swirl of colors before my eyes. I smothered my bagel in chocolate frosting and placed the Play-Doh resembling confection into my mouth.
I will be completely honest in saying that the bagel itself tasted somewhat bland. Nonetheless, the sheer concept of eating something so unique and so darn pretty made me giddy.
I've eaten plenty of colorful things in my life, from rainbow lollipops to fruit roll ups, but the idea of a rainbow bagel simply astounds me. It also makes me wonder, why aren't ALL bagels rainbow-colored? Wouldn't people be infinitely happier if they got to start their days off with rainbow bagels? Just try to imagine an angry person eating a rainbow bagel. You can't do it, can you?
Rainbow bagels are an ingenious novelty crafted by The Bagel Store in Brooklyn, New York. The owner of the store, Scot Rossillo, along with his small staff makes each bagel by hand by layering beautifully colored dough and carefully rolling it into donut shapes.
And now, because the store has such incredible demand, with hundreds of bagel-eaters lining up outside the shop on a daily basis and floods of orders coming in online, one of The Bagel Store's locations has closed. But fear not, for the store's location on Metropolitan Avenue will remain open.
So if you're in New York and eager to wait in a really long line, go grab a rainbow bagel. You won't regret it.
