88.9 Radio Milwaukee: My Lifesaver

My life would be dull without it

88.9 Radio Milwaukee: My Lifesaver

If it weren't for 88.9, I would hardly ever turn the radio on, and my life would be dull. Radio Milwaukee is my favorite station for countless reasons.

First, the station is so down-to-earth. Every morning, Dory Zory plays. She's my favorite. I love the way she announces. She tells you about what shows are coming to Milwaukee that she's playing. Plus, there are no cheesy and annoying commercials. The DJ just states the sponsors and events local givers are holding between songs. The station has no annoying jingle, it's simply a cool voice stating "88.9 Radio Milwaukee." On Saturdays, there is a theme and listeners call in and make requests.

So what kind of music does this great station play? They play a variety of unique indie and alternative rock songs. Not only do they play the big bands, but they also make sure to fit in one Milwaukee artist per hour. I love this aspect and getting to know Milwaukee better. I feel like I learn a lot more about the music because the station hosts announce the new songs and who's coming to Milwaukee. They also have community stories and host life shows every Thursday night at their studios.

Moreover, they usually have some sort of community service project going on that will be announced so you can help out Milwaukee. Plus, they host contests like any other radio station would, but most of them are online, and there are no annoying constant commercials for them. The prizes are unique and exciting, such as tickets to see M83's upcoming show at the riverside.

In conclusion, if you don't listen to the radio much, or have never heard of 88.9, I encourage you to tune in one morning for Dory Zory on your way to work or school or just waking up. Even if you aren't a huge fan of alternative and indie rock, if this station doesn't change your opinion, you will at least learn a little bit more about the place we call home.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

Books were always about understanding for me, about learning the way someone else sees, about connection.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

I keep making this joke whenever the idea of books is brought up: "God, I wish I knew how to read." It runs parallel to another stupid phrase, as I watch my friends struggle through their calculus classes late at night in our floor lounge: "I hope this is the year that I learn to count." They're both truly idiotic expressions, but, when I consider the former, I sometimes wonder if there's some truth to it.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

It's not all morning coffees and singing along to the radio.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.
