I have always loved music. I spent middle school and most of high school attending concerts. I told my parents that I wanted to go on tour after graduation, selling merchandise for a band as we travelled the country in a white van with a trailer full of equipment attached.
That, admittedly, was a bit of a crazy dream.
Now, though, seven years after I first developed these dreams of touring, I landed an internship at a radio station, and the music lover in me is swooning.
I spend my mornings on air, cracking jokes and discussing the latest in country music culture with an amazing morning show host. Considering myself a shy person who does not typically speak unless spoken to and avoids attention at all costs, I never expected to be doing something like this.
My first day, though, I was asked to grab a pair of headphones, slide up to a microphone, and introduce myself. Because, after all, they "just had to introduce the new intern." I did it, reluctantly so. It didn't take long for me to love it, however, and now three weeks in, I'm on air for the morning show Tuesdays and Wednesdays and that is my favorite part of my mornings at the radio station.
Through this opportunity, though I've only been at the radio station for a short time, I have learned so much. I handle much of the social media for one station in the building, allowing me to show off my creative writing skills and learn a lot about what it takes to appeal to others and get social engagement.
This experience has forced me to step out of my bubble of comfort. It has forced me to take chances and do things that are unfamiliar and sometimes frightening, but it's all for the purpose of me getting the most out of my internship and learning as much as I can.
I never expected to be given the opportunity to be on air even, but I am so happy that I am.
I may be a shy introvert, but that doesn't mean I don't have a future in radio.
