Rad Places In Tucson To Beat The Heat

Rad Places In Tucson To Beat The Heat

I spent the first 17 years of my life in Tucson, Arizona where 110 degree summers were inevitable. So, with all those years of dealing with an incredibly intense heat, I was required to discover fun things to do that weren't what my usual outdoorsy self would do. This necessity to find entertainment indoors helped lead me to these magical places.

1. Try an Eegee

Eegee's is one of those places that I bring my visiting friends to the second they land in town. An eegee is a flavored ice/slushie drink and is only available in southern Arizona, and a huge hit with the locals. Beyond their typical flavors; lemon, pina colada and strawberry, Eegee's has a flavor of the month. The flavor of July is watermelon, which is among the most popular and my favorite. I highly suggest trying one of these, it'll melt in your mouth and keep your mind off the intense heat.

2. Mt. Lemmon

Mt. Lemmon, a part of Coronado National Forest, is great way to escape the heat, as the 9,175 ft. elevation creates a temperature of at least 20 degrees cooler than Tucson. Beyond just the temperature advantage, Mt. Lemmon is absolutely beautiful with pine trees and wildflowers growing about -- which is well worth the hour and a half drive. My friends and I road trip up whenever we have a free day and picnic or explore the mountain and appreciate being outdoors without worry of heatstroke.

And photograph your heart out; the atmosphere is killer.

3. Wooden Tooth Records, 416 E 7th St, Tucson, AZ 85705

I have to include the most incredible record shop I've been to in this list, Wooden Tooth Records. This shop is located on 4th & 7th street in downtown Tucson and has all your record needs. When my boyfriend was visiting from Colorado, we checked out all the record stores in town and nothing was as magical as this place. I found two Led Zeppelin albums and a Pink Floyd album and my boyfriend got four cassette tapes. The atmosphere in the shop is very retro which fuels my nostalgia for the past and satisfies all my vinyl needs.

4. How Sweet It Was Vintage Shop, 424 E 6th St, Tucson, AZ 85705

If you have an obsession with past fashions like I do, this place is your heaven. This shop is located in downtown Tucson and has curated authentic clothing for every decade. Most shops with this specific and categorized vintage clothing end up being unreasonably expensive, but this shop is fairly priced. Instead of melting in the heat of Arizona, get a group of friends together and throw a midcentury party with outfits from How Sweet It Was.

These are a couple of my favorite places to go during Arizona summers, and I hope you find them as special as I do!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
