5 Things You Can Do To Keep Your Sanity During Self-Isolation

If you are anything like me, then staying at home with your parents for extended amounts of time is the greatest test of your patience, and in turn your sanity. My parents' aura rubs against mine and I can't seem to concentrate, or rather I feel slightly more judged and cautious. They too are frustrated and cramped, and so our negative energies are bound to clash in close quarters.

While it is important to quarantine, it is also important to maintain your mental clarity. Here are some things you can do to keep your mind steady, intrigued, and productive.

1. Avoid information overload.

Regardless of whether you watch TV or get your news online, COVID-19 is being constantly talked about. There is an endless stream of information that bombards our brains and it can wear us out before we know it. Instead, set aside time each morning to educate yourself on any new national or global news regarding the pandemic and then go forward with your day.

2. Create a morning routine.

After a small dose of the news, start your day with structure with a morning routine. Spending time at home has allowed me to take great pleasure in the small joys of life like having coffee, making my bed, brushing my hair. These small activities provide stability and a sense of purpose.

3. Exercise and meditate.

Not only is this a great opportunity to work on that summer body, but exercise is a perfect 'excuse' to go outside and get much needed space from others in the house. Now that the weather is getting warmer, hopefully a stroll around the neighborhood or in an open park (without close contact to people) is more than possible. Having an outlet for pent up energy and restlessness can make you more productive. Apps like Headspace and Calm are great for meditation, especially if you are a beginner and would like some direction. Youtube is also filled with workout routines that can be done at home as well.

4. Wear normal clothes.

This is one of my personal favorites. I work and feel much better when I get out of my comfortable sweats. It feels rejuvenating and motivating to simply put on jeans instead of leggings. It makes me feel less lazy, and less quarantined.

5. Facetime friends.

This is an important one, since our friends keep us grounded and less in our heads. They are a huge source of motivation for me, and with the blessing of technology we can access them in so many ways without physically meeting up.

These are a few ways to keep yourself focused and motivated even when trapped in your own home. We must remember that quarantining is not just for ourselves, but for everyone else's safety. Just by being at home, we are doing our best as citizens to slow the spread. Stay safe, and stay mindful.

It's officially December. There is less than a month of 2024, and I still feel like yesterday was summer. Now comes the merriest time of the year, the Christmas season.

Everyone has been waiting for this time of year since mid-October (which is way too early, in my opinion) or before. It's a time of love, family, memory-making, and gift-giving. A lot of times when I ask friends and family what they want, I get a lot of "I don't know" or "I don't care."

I was sitting at my cubicle, now that I am an adult, looking at the rain pouring down on the windowsill, bumming on life, wishing for the rain to just stop for a full day.

There are moments where we count down the hours until work is over and how many more days till the weekend, and this many weeks until something exciting. Or something like that? Well, I was bumming because my next day off from work is not until Memorial Day weekend, which is not until the end of May. And since this is my first year out of college being a “real person,” I am totally missing the winter, spring and summer breaks. I am sure all of us have felt this way even if just for a hot minute…
