2016 has been a rough year, to say the least, especially this past week, losing three well-loved stars. From David Bowie to Debbie Reynolds, it's been one long goodbye. Looking forward to the new year, let's take a look at the words of wisdom some of these icons have left us to consider for our own lives.

1. David Bowie

"I don't know where I'm going from here, but I promise it won't be boring."

2. Alan Rickman

"I think there should be laughs in everything. Sometimes, it's a slammed door, a pie in the face or just a recognition of our frailties."

"I want to swim in both directions at once. Desire success, court failure."

3. Harper Lee

"The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a person's conscience."

"You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don't you let 'em get your goat. Try fightin' with your head for a change."

4. Nancy Reagan

"You learn something out of everything, and you come to realize more than ever that we're all here for a certain space of time, and, and then it's going to be over, and you better make this count."

5. Glenn Frey

"People don't run out of dreams - people just run out of time."

6. Prince

"It's a hurtful place, the world, in and of itself. We don't need to add to it. And we're in a place now where we all need one another, and it's going to get rougher."

7. Doris Roberts

"When I go, if there's a tombstone it will say, 'She doesn't give in. She doesn't give up. And she never takes no for an answer.'"

8. Muhammad Ali

"If they can make penicillin out of moldy bread, they can sure make something out of you."

"It isn't the mountains ahead to climb that wear you out; it's the pebble in your shoe."

9. Christina Grimmie

"Confidence is not 'they will like me'. Confidence is 'I'll be fine if they don't'."

10. Gene Wilder

"Well, you know, success is a terrible thing and a wonderful thing. If you can enjoy it, it's wonderful. If it starts eating away at you and they're waiting for more from me, or what can I do to top this, then you're in trouble. Just do what you love. That's all I want to do."

11. Alan Thicke

"If one tends to be a humorous person and you have a sense of humor the rest of your life then you can certainly lighten the load, I think, by bringing that to your trials and tribulations. It’s easy to have a sense of humor when everything is going well."

12. George Michael

"You'll never find peace of mind until you listen to your heart."

"Be good to yourself 'cause nobody else has the power to make you happy."

13. Carrie Fisher

"Stay afraid, but do it anyway. What’s important is the action. You don’t have to wait to be confident. Just do it and eventually the confidence will follow.”

14. Debbie Reynolds

"I never dreamt of being in the movies. I was from a very average, I would say, a rather poor family, so my big treat was to work hard all week - I mowed lawns and babysat and washed dishes and washed cars - to go to the movies."

And one more from Mr. Bowie...

"Tomorrow belongs to those who can hear it coming."

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
