Quotes from "Dead Poets Society" That Changed My Life
NY Daily News

The movie "Dead Poets Society" has been my favorite film since the day I saw it my freshman year of high school. It continues to inspire me every time I watch it, and although I have seen it over a dozen times, I always learn something new every time I see it. The movie is filled with quotes that have taught me so many lessons, and the following are a few of my favorite quotes that have helped me lead a better life.

1. What are you living for?

"We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for."

The quote above was one of the reasons that I have always continued being an artist. It is extremely important to me to continue to create art and write poetry, even if I do not pursue a career in doing so. I believe that it is important to do the things you love in order to enjoy the life you live.

2. Finding your voice

"Boys, you must strive to find your own voice. Because the longer you wait to begin, the less likely you are to find it at all. Thoreau said, "Most men lead lives of quiet desperation." Don't be resigned to that. Break out!"

Finding your own voice is extremely important in a world that has so many individuals who are trying to be heard. I spend so much of my life being quiet, not thinking that my thoughts were worth anything. The second I began to speak my mind and find myself was the moment in which I finally became happy.

3. Don't hold back your thoughts

"No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world."It is so important to speak your mind and share your thoughts and ideas. Despite what some people may think, one person can change the world drastically, and it is important to let your words be heard. You never know the things you can achieve when you share things with others, because everyone's thoughts are valid.

4. Not everything should be approached in the same way

"I stand upon my desk to remind myself that we must constantly look at things in a different way."

The scene of the movie in which Mr. Keating allows each student to stand upon his desk will always be one of my favorite scenes in "Dead Poets Society." This quote made me think about the situations I deal with every day of my life, and how sometimes I cannot approach everything in the same way. This scene challenged me to see both sides of situations, to accept that others are different than me, and to look at everything in life in a new light.

5. Seize the day

"Carpe diem, seize the day boys, make your lives extraordinary."

This quote is probably the most popular quote from the film, and hearing this for the first time motivated me to do something great every day of my life. It is so important to do great things, to help people, and to be a better person. All in all, this movie has helped inspire me and so many others to seize the day.

"I want to thank Google, Wikipedia, and whoever else invented copy and paste. Thank you."

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
