A Quick Political Realization

I just experienced something today while eating dinner with a bunch of my friends. To preface, they were all discussing our newest president, Donald Trump, and some of the things that he's been doing, now that he's newly elected. Suddenly, in the middle of their conversation, a realization struck me; I didn't care for a single word of what they were saying. I didn't care about what Trump was doing, I didn't care what Trump was going to do, I didn't care about the future impacts of what he has to say, I just didn't care.

Now, that makes me sound like an awful citizen; who in their right mind would just completely not be open to the discussion on the future of their country? Well...that person is me, and I believe the reason why I'm like this, had been because of the massive overreacting that happened once he was elected. People were rioting in the streets, somewhere claiming that they wouldn't accept him, his own party was denouncing him, there wasn't a single place in all of America where someone wasn't pissed. I think that that's completely ridiculous.

Sure, he has views that the majority of us don't agree with, sure he wants to take actions that are completely stupid and harmful to us as a nation, and sure he doesn't believe in climate change, (although you can't really hold a belief about something if it's already been proven real) but that doesn't mean he's going to do any of that!

First off, what campaigning politician has ever kept their word on what they do on the campaign trail? It's awful that I am able to say that, but the truth is the truth; rarely ever does a politician, especially a newly elected president, actually go through with what they planned to do, and even if they do, rarely ever is that promise fulfilled correctly. Most of the time, it's just pandering to a specific group of people to acquire votes, and guess what, it tends to work.

In addition to this, there are so many people who stand in the way of whatever that politician is trying to do, be they the local government or congress itself. All of these are filled with people who have the right mindset to know what would be best for us as a whole. Just because one person says he plans to do something doesn't mean he'll be able to do it.

But I digress, as the main idea here is that everyone is overreacting. Trump is not a dictator, he is not a tyrant, he will never be Hitler, he will never be Stalin, he probably won't even do half the things he says he wants to do! Right now, however, is too early to say anything for sure. We just need to ride out the storm and see where it takes us. Because who knows, Trump could very well be the best thing to happen to us in a long time.

Of course, I fully expect to eat my words in the not so distant future.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
