El Salvador is a small country in Central America. it appears as if many people have not tried Salvadorian food or know much about the culture. Truth is, you are missing out on delicious dishes.

1. Pupusas

Pupasas are the most typical dish in El Salvador. Pupasas have the appearance of a tortilla, but they have cheese in the inside with your choice of meat or vegetable.

2. Pan con Pollo (chicken sandwich)

Salvadorian chicken sandwiches are different from sandwiches from other countries. They have pulled chicken on a tomato sauce with a vegetables of your choice.

3. Tamales

Every Latin country has their own type of tamales. In the Salvadorian cuisine, there is tamal de elote (which is completely made out of corn), tamal de pollo (chicken tamale), Tamal pisque (tamale stuffed with refried beans).

4. Empanada

Empandas are fried. They are made out of ground plantain stuffed with a sweet filling topped with sugar.

5. Yuca Frita

Fried yucca usually served with chicharones (fried pork).

6. Quesadilla Salvadoreña


In contrast to the Mexican quesadillas, quesadillas Salvadoreña are a sweet bread. It contains a variety of dairy products, such as cheese and sour cream.

7. Enchiladas

Fried toritalla layered with fried beans, sour cream, pulled chicken, vegetables, and grated cheese.

8. Nuegados de yuca

Ground yucca formed to a ball, then fried, topped with honey.

9. Pastelitos Salvadoreños

A turnover stuffed with either ground beef, ground chicken, or vegetables.

10. Riguas

Ground corn. It has the appearance of a tortilla.

11. Elote loco

Corn on the cob topped with mustard, ketchup, mayo, and grated cheese.

12. Salpicon de res

Ground meat combined with small pieces of vegetables.

This is just a small list of the delicious dishes that are part of the Salvadorian cuisine. Trying new things can always lead to great findings. Salvadorian food is something that everyone should try and fall in love with! Run to a Salvadorian restaurant and try it. I promise you won't regret it.

I remember my freshman year oh so well. I remember feeling terrified the night before orientation. The one thing that I dreaded the most was not the new people, the new environment, or even the academic pressure. I was dreading having to talk to sorority girls about Recruitment. I remember cutting off and avoiding any Rho Gamma/Panhellenic Officer that came my way during First Week. I looked at them like they had asked me to cut my arm off whenever they asked me if I wanted to rush. To be honest, I did not even know what rush was, but I knew that I did NOT want to be a part of it. To me, it was dumb. It was a waste of money. It was a waste of my time.

And guess what? I did not rush my freshman year. I spent the first half of my freshman year isolating myself from everyone on campus. I spent all of my time in the library, and then (since I was a commuter) went back home once my work was finished.
