I recently began working at a coffee shop (the best job ever may I add) and my world was rocked when I learned many of the things I thought I knew about coffee are actually totally wrong! I thought of myself as quite the coffee enthusiast. After all, I knew all of the sizes, secret flavors, and best drinks at Starbucks. But turns out, I'm no coffee expert. And my gut tells me after reading this, you'll realize you aren't either. I bet you didn't know:
1. Coffee beans actually come from inside little cherry-like berries!
I'm not sure where my misconception came from, but I always thought coffee beans grew similarly to chocolate beans.
2. It's pronounced 'espresso' not 'expresso'.
Don't believe me? Google it.
3. There's no such thing as a 'caramel macchiato'
...or any flavored macchiato to be exact. Macchiato's literal meaning is "marked". Therefore, a macchiato is just a shot of espresso "marked" with a dollop of foam. No flavoring whatsoever. Order a flavored macchiato, and you'll receive a flavored latte.
4. Cappuccinos only come in one size.
5. Much of the quality coffee we consume is made on small family farms.
In Ohio, we have a lot of family farms producing corn and beans for local consumption. Similarly, quality coffee is usually produced on family farms.
6. If you come in and order a 'Black Mamba' or a 'Muddy Irishman' you may get a crazy confused look at first.
Starbucks has practically shaped coffee culture, and uses unique beverage names as a marketing strategy. So if you want a unique drink, we can certainly make it for you! Though you may have to tell us exactly what's inside.
So there you have it, six quick facts about coffee you may have never known before. You learn something new every day! Hopefully these quick facts will help you better understand your coffee, I know they've helped me!
