As college students who live away from home the one thing we look forward to most is Christmas break. We finally can have a break from all the stress since finals are over and focus catching up with our family members. However, our sweet dream of relaxing vanishes as soon as we walk in the door. Our happiness turns into chaos once we’re bombarded with a thousand questions coming from every relative in the room.Have you changed your major? Do you like it there? Are you actually studying? It’s understandable why our family members are so curious with this chapter of our lives, but here’s why we hate being asked these questions.
1. Are you actually studying?
Recommended for you
Yes I do spend countless hours in the library stressing over the plethora of assignments I have piling up. Sorry that I do not post pictures on my social media of me studying in the library, I feel like that’s implied.
2. What do you plan on doing with your major?
For some of us we’ve known what we wanted to do since we were little, others change their major every other month. Regardless no matter how many times we share what our future occupation will be our family members magically forget. If they do remember it’s usually followed up with “Are you sure you will make a lot of money doing that?” This always results with an eye roll and trying to explain that people don’t always pick a job for money rather than they actually enjoy doing it.
3. Do you have a boyfriend/girlfriend yet?
This is by far the most frequent question asked. Your response is typically along the lines of this is a time to focus on yourself and you don’t need someone to distract you from your studies. However, in reality you are trying you best to find that special someone. Every time this question is asked, you find yourself having flashbacks of your failed attempts for finding that someone and it is much like throwing salt in the wound. So no I haven’t found someone yet, but when I do I will let you know. Please stop asking.
4. Are you enjoying college?
Yes I’m enjoying it as much as possible. If you look past all the hard work, stress, and all the student loans I’m going to have to pay off, college is wonderful.
5. Do you go out a lot?
No (yes).
6. Do you miss us?
YES. There are plenty of days where we want to pack up our things and move back home. We miss being a door away from our parents rather than miles, but it’s a sacrifice we had to make. The only thing that keeps us sane during finals week is knowing that afterwards we get to go home and spend quality time with our families. Being away from home just makes us appreciate our families a little bit more.
Regardless of how many questions they ask or how annoying it can be from time to time, seeing our families on break makes the stress of all the finals worth it.
