Any girls romantically and sexually interested in girls will undoubtedly agree that living as a queer woman can, at times, be incredibly challenging. And although I only touched on thirty reasons why, I promise you, there's a heck of a lot more.
Here are 30 struggles that only girls who like girls will understand:
1. "Is she flirting with me, or is she just really nice?"
2. Two periods, one relationship
3. Being friends and having crushes on each other, but never doing anything about it
4. "Oh, I just LOVE 'Orange is the New Black'!"
5. Hating when Betty and Veronica kissed in "Riverdale"
6. Having to explain to your doctor why you getting pregnant is impossible
7. "The boys at school must be all OVER you!"
8. "What do you MEAN you don't use protection?"
9. The Girlfriend vs. Girl Friend debate
10. "Who's the man in your relationship?"
11. "I don't understand how you could like women, vaginas are nasty"
12. "Lesbian sex isn't even really sex"
13. Getting asked why you don't LOOK gay
14. "You don't have a crush on me, do you…?"
15. Feeling guys stare at you as you and your girlfriend kiss
16. "Is she wearing that because she's gay or because she likes it?"
17. The "U-Haul" jokes
18. "Oh, yeah, I've kissed plenty of girls at parties"
19. "Don't get too close or people might think you're dating!"
20. Overanalyzing every compliment and every Instagram bio emoji
21. "I love lesbians! Ellen is the BEST!"
22. Underrepresentation in films and on television
23. Only knowing of a few songs/artists that recognize gayness
24. 90% of your crushes are straight
25. You can't even enjoy the porn because it's SO inaccurate
Giphy26. "You up for a threesome?"
27. "Girls are SO hot, but I could never date one!"
Giphy28. Getting told you sit weirdly or "like a guy"
29. "That's your girlfriend? I thought that was your BFF!"
30. Searching "lesbian" in Google and being sent straight to porn sites
GiphyI was literally searching for gifs for this point in the list and the word "lesbian" must've told the Internet gods that what I REALLY was looking for was some half-assed porn directed by clearly straight males. Cue the unwanted pop-ups with full nudity and probably plenty of computer viruses (good thing I wasn't in public…). But seriously, why are queer women so sexualized that even Google can't do right by us?
To all of the girls who like girls out there, live proudly and love loudly.
